Help please - Having just bought a brand new set of cheapish breathable oilies (still in their bag) at Netley Boat Jumble I was very unhappy to find they smell very musty. I have tried washing them twice with Nikwax Pure Soap (specially for use with breathable oilies, cagoules etc) in the washing machine (30 degrees and the system flushed through before hand) but they still come out smelling musty.

Does anyone know how I can remove the smell without damaging the garments or destroying the breathability?

Many thanks

The main thing about Nikwax is that it doesn't contain perfumes, so washing it with Nikwax is near useless.

Just use your average detergent, Gore-tex doesn't mind. On the contrary, the more you wash a gore-tex, the better: it keeps the pores open. But rince thoroughly and don't tumble dry.

Instead after the wash, dump it in the bath, rince using the shower, and let it dry above the bath. It pleases SWMBO soooooo much. (similar with halyards/sails/tender...)

musty shoes benefit from bicarb of soda
you could liberally apply this to the inside
for a day then wash
i just use persil on my breqathables the label reccomends washing with mild detergent
