My Snug is close to 15 years old and past its best. It's too good not to have one, but I've no desire to pay a Musto premium. (common thread through my posts )

Any suggestions for a non-premium product that is as warm and weather-resistant?

Thanks in advance.

I ended up buying a new snug from the Musto outlet store. I kept the old one even though it was past it's best. I don't wear the new one, it's too nice to spoil :ROFLMAO:

My son paid £50 for a new snug from the Musto outlet store at Gunwharf last weekend. I still have my original one that I bought in Cowes over 30 years ago (very rough round the edges now) that I replaced with a new one last year. As you know they are a good piece of kit !

I also bought a new Musto snug to replace the old Musto snug. I now have two perfectly good Musto snugs! There is no substitute. The first one is over 30 years old so at about £2 a year I don't think it's very expensive at all.

I but all my Musto gear either on eBay or at the Gunwharf outlet.
The premium somewhat pays off if an item of clothing lasts years and years!

I got mine after sailing with a guy who had three. Best, sailing and antifouling. When the best one got tired, he'd buy a new one and demote the others. the antifoul one was demoted to the skip.

I've seen a few cheap clearance offers, but not in my size, unfortunately - I need XL, but I'll call Gunwharf in the morning.

Very true, but if a new one lasts as long as my old one, it'll likely outlive me!

Lands End used to do a Squall Jacket that is almost as snug as a Snug. But their website seems to show that it's been discontinued - there's a 'light' version but it's not a Snug equivalent. However some new snug ones are still available on Ebay.

You could look at belay jackets from the mountaineering world. Snugpack Sleeka have a good rep. I hate the place but if you were to have a wander around Go Outdoors or (preferably) Decathlon I’m sure you would find something. If you REALLY don’t want to be cold there’s the Buffalo range but I think they’re mostly smocks. Montane Extreme stuff is very similar to Buffalo.

But they have them in there at half the price of Musto.
Please point me/us to the specific jacket they have that is equivalent to a Musto Snug. I'd be delighted if there was one - I think Decathlon is a marvelous supplier - but I haven't found one in the past.

They used to do one called a Quencha jacket (for hiking), but I can't see it on their website.

The thing is, there are literally thousands of substitutes. It’s basically a showerproof/waterproof outer with a fleece liner. If you go to any outdoor shop you will find non-musto equivalents as this is a very common combination of features to offer in a coat. I’ve listed a few above. I own a Musto snug, it was given to me and very nice it is too, but there are plenty of jackets like it.

I have had loads over the years and really rate them however they are about £120 now, in Force 4. I also got fed up with only being able to get black or charcoal linings - who wants a new jacket that looks identical to the old one?

So a couple of years ago I bought a Maindeck Crew Jacket, they are usually offered between about 25 to 50 pounds. Not the same quality, but cheap and cheerful :

The waterproof material has been good and has not leaked, the lining is ok too but not as heavy as the Musto. It has held up generally ok, the pockets are still sound and the zips are fine. Some of the lining came unstitched at the collar very early on, it has not got much worse and is probably a reflection of the price base.
The main gripe with the design is that the inside pocket is not very deep. So, unless you always remember to use the zip, if you bend down the whole contents shoot out onto the floor (or into the sea).
