Has anyone checked a musto crewbag into the hold on a plane?
Just wondering if it should be wrapped first... maybe I'm asking a silly question.

I've got a Musto crewbag, I'd be happy to use as hold baggage. Just treat it like any other suitcase or holdall, unless you are worried about it being damaged in some way, which applies to any baggage really.

I have a HH crew bag that I use as a hold all for my SCUBA gear, it always goes in the hold on planes.

When I check in, I ask them to fix the fragile label. I also add padlocks to the zip toggles.

Never had any problems.

I checked mine in with no problem from La Rochelle to Southampton. I did put a small padlock on the main section of the bag, not really to prevent unauthorised access, more to ensure that the zip didn't open accidentally.

Many times.

Remove the shoulder strap and Velcro the handles together. I also put a small padlock on the zips to discourage casual rummaging.

Checked in my Gill Jumbo bag for a sailing trip in Greece back in June. OK going out, but coming back when I collected it from the baggage carousel one of the sides had been ripped off and all my sailing kit was exposed. Nothing had fallen out, gladly, but I had to claim for a new bag from that well known orange airline.
Within a week I had received a new Gill jumbo. It wasn't the same as my previous one but this did come with wheels. Bit of a result.
The bag only had clothing in it, so less to worry about.

Is it possible that you did not attach the handles together? That way one can ge caught on something, if that happens on a belt then bags keep piling up behind until something gives. The musto bag has a little velcro flap that allows you to secure the handles together. Failing that a strap round the whole lot, capturing the handles, would do.

For the same reason it is important to remove the shoulder strap.

I have put sailing type bags on planes literally 100's of times and never had any damage.

I like the look of the metal mesh thing, I may try it. Although there is an argument for having a scruffy unremarkable bag with little or no attempt to secure it.

Sorry for such a startlingly mundane post!

All great info, thanks very much. I'll certainly be removing the straps and velcroing the handles together. Maybe even a bit of gaffa tape to keep them down.

My only idea was to pop the bag into a big heavy duty rubble sack and cable tie the end.

The rubble sack would arouse a great deal of suspicion, I would think, from handlers to customs folk and all points in between. When doing the pre-flight walk-around (I do a bit of flying), I always glance into the holds to see whether we've been loaded, where and how much etc, and I've never seen a bag covered in the way you suggest.
