I have just found that the inlet seacock for the toilet is full of mussels to the point that I wonder how I was getting any water through. This raises two questions.
1. How do I get them out from behind the inlet strainer, preferrably without undoing the bolts and removing it?
2. Is there any way to stop the b****rs growing there in the first place?

Have the same problem myself and asked similar questions last year.

We've been based on the East coast, river Dart and now the Med. and always the little B's get inside an inlet cock.

Last time we were on the hard we painted inside the cocks with 2 pack paint, which we've found works wonders with preventing "things" growing, and so far that seems to have worked.

Mussels, apparently, can't cope with hot water. Mussel farmers in some parts of the world lose their whole crop when the sea temp rises above 27 degrees.

I would wait until June/July when the spat will have settled and grown into baby mussels and then proceed as follows:

1. Close seacock

2. Disconnect inlet hose from pump and raise end above waterline

3. Fill hose with very hot water

4. Open seacock

Good luck.

This might kill them (and provide a tasty meal although the sauce might be a little piquant?!), but would it physically shift them out of the tube? I wouldn't have thought so.

I had mussels in my outlet and put a dose of toilet cleaner through, which got rid of them pronto. I imagine you could pour some down the inlet pipe by diconnecting a couple of hose clips.

..but I'm proposing a law banning the hunting of mussels with hot water and I hope it will pass through Parliament before next summer.
