What's the best music to take on a sailing trip? I mean going with cross section of pals, differnent age groups and backgrounds.

What would you take as essential listening?

Does anyone care about music anymore?

None at all would be my preference.

Music to sail to

Our kids have made up a sailing selection on their ipods. Some of them are;

Adiemus - Karl Jenkins. My personal favourite for beautiful sunsets as you head into a peaceful anchorage and also for a glorious spinnaker run.
One of These Days -Pink Floyd: For beating out through the Needles Channel.
Day Tripper (We change the words to Day Skipper and all sing along).
Rock Lobster - B52s: Our boat anthem.
Chicken Fried -Zac Brown Band: Gambit's boat anthem.
Wade in the Water -Eva Cassidy
Island of Lost Souls -Blondie

And lots more.

I'm with VicS too on this one. The music is the sound of water on the hull and wind in your sails . Enjoy any other soudtracks inside your head.
Although there may be a place for some other tunes once the anchor is snug on the bottom and you've spent sufficient time listening to and appreciating the birds, seals, etc. (and so long as it doesn't disturb any other boats nearby! :()

These days you do not need to choose.

I have 3000 songs on my iPad. I take them all. I tell my friends to bring all their music as well. We normally end up with 10,000 plus songs.

If you can't find something you like to suit the mood in that lot, the problem is not the music.:)

We have spent a few nights settling down with a lovely Liam Clancy CD of maritime songs The wide and Wasteful Ocean or some similar title.

Not heard of him before but I could listen his sort of music. ( Home from the Sea playing in my headphones at the moment)
Country music generally, Irish or Western

Easy listening music I suppose. One or two female singers I like but could not name.
But I'll stick with my original vote for none

You'd not want any of the music my son's band plays/sings  Punk I think its called.

.

On a long car journey I tell people to bring their own and then enforce the 'three song rule'. That is each person chooses 3 songs, and everyone gets a turn. Most people can stand 10 or 12 minutes of other people's music....

But that said - on the boat? None... or live music from small instruments.
