Just a thought .....

Is it possible for the coast guard helicopter to actually zero in on people mis-using Ch. 16?

The reason for the thought is that I can't believe some of the things I've heard taking place on this channel this year!! The number of muppets that seem to think Solent Coast guard want to help them get a berth at whatever Marina or we're all interested in what they're having for tea that evening is astounding.

Surely it's time for some action to be taken before someone ends up paying the ultimate price!!

End of rant

Absolutely, its disgraceful that such traffic takes place and interrupts someone's vital radio check! Solent CG are so concerned about this that they appear to be trying to get 67 as a dedicated radio check channel but the cognoscenti know that Ch16 is the proper one to use.

Yes they can, there was a case couple of so years ago in studlands, parents left kids on board a smallish speedboat, playing with VHF, coastguard zeroed in and dealt with it.
Not sure exactly what happened but heard boat was beached and kids taken off.

"QHM this is yacht Molly"
"Yacht Molly go ahead"
"QHM we are approaching the Ballast Buoy and would like to let you know that the Pride of Cherbourg is entering Portsmouth Harbour"
"Yacht Molly errrrr thank you very much ?!?"
"Always happy to help, over and out"

It loses some of the visual comedy just being on radio......

Our whole crew just looked at each other and burst out laughing! To be precise it was not Saturday it was Sunday and at about 10am, Ch 11. Others must have heard it too!

Not the Coastguards role, but that of the Radio Agency. It's what you pay loadsa money every year for when you buy your VHF licence - but do they do anything, do they ....!

At least you seem to have the Navy under better control in the Solent. Down in Dartmouth we continually have them in their little launches with a chap at the front holding his .... oh yes I remember, boathook ... berthing, unberthing, yes skipper etc. Hours of it.

Mind you even better is their performance when asked to park a frigate off the town to entertain the grockles. Last time it took them 2 hours and 2 tugs and many tired comments from tug skippers ... "If you'd just try SLOW astern please Captain" to park the noisy thing. I might add that the huge commercial liners are all parked and getting their punters ashore in 15 minutes.

Someone, and it wasn't me, did get on the VHF when they finally berthed the frigate and said "Well that didn't take long, did it ?"

Priceless! You couldn't make it up! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

From now on I'll be sure to let Dover Port Control know when they have a ferry coming in.

Warship talking to QE2 years ago off Start Point, after unsuccessfully trying all the usual working channels finally went on Salcombe Harbours working channel for their chat (basically just to say how nice QE2 looked, where were they going etc, nothing important liking arranging a BBQ you understand). They were interupted by a call from Salcombe HM asking them to go to a proper channel, said HM probably on his handheld in the launch managed to tick off the RN and (then) THE prestige liner at one press of a button.

There was a good one a few weeks ago. Some yacht made a Pan call off Browndown saying that his engine had failed and that he wouldn't be able to get onto his berth. Solent CG asked him a few questions. The skipper then said that the engine had failed between chichester and p'mouth and he was going to the Hamble. It was then established that he was happily sailing along and was in no danger. He then asked the cg if they had any ideas about how he could fix it because the engine turned over 1/2 a turn but wouldn't start and he didn't want to damage the engine anymore. Solent CG, who were now getting annoyed told him to phone sea start. Muppet.

Being a raggie I like to think that in most cases I can utilise this thing called wind to get to my destination and the engine is there as an auxlillary for when the wind runs out of puff!

Perhaps we could start a muppet of the month award! A bit like the Darwin awards but you don't have to kill yourself to take part!! Just make a major cock up whilst on the briney!!

Any nominations?!?!
