I was recently sent a renewal notice for my multi trip insurance cover. Accompanying the notice was a booklet detailing changes to the policy. It appears I am covered for sailing as long as sailing is not the reason for my trip (??).

So I phoned to query this and was put through to the call centre. I explained that as a yacht owner the purpose of my trip(s) tended to be sailing. She thought about this for a moment and asked when my holiday was booked.

I explained I didn't have a holiday booked, I had a yacht and didn't have to book, I just went sailing. After consultation with a colleague she came back to the phone and said my trip had to be in a narrow boat or a 'channel cruiser'.

I lost my rag and cancelled the insurance.

Can anyone recommend an insurer who offers multi trip insurance for sailors?
 
Yep, another vote for Pantaenius. They did quote me a higher premium than others, but then offered more NCB, making them very competitive...
 
I've been with insureandgo now for several years.

Their policy covers yachting (both cruising and racing) as standard so long as it is within territorial waters.

I had to pay extra on a daily basis for a trip from the Azores to Gibraltar (we agreed an estimate of the number of days we would be outside territorial waters).
 
Everyone should take care with this.

People just want to sell multi trip/annual travel insurance.

I tried many and all said yes until I asked where sailing was included in the text. I was assured it was and each time elevated to the next level of management. While each assure me one I asked for it to be put in writing or OK if I confirmed it to them they all said I would not be covered!

RYA policy from Bishops Skinner does cover you but claims are handled by a different company so make sure you keep receipts, boxes and original wrapping of anything!

Claims Department mission statement "We try to minimise claims by making them impossible".
 
I can put a good word in for insureandgo with regards to dealing with claims. I have a friend who badly injured his leg whilst skiing, insureandgo did everything you could wish for in dealing with his case. The final bill was over £25k and when his renewal came up they still gave him 10% discount for renewing with them. From the moment they were informed (about half hour after the accident) they took care of everything.

2. The following amateur activities are also automatically covered without paying any additional premium, but the policy excludes any cover under the Personal Accident and Personal Liability sections:
Abseiling, Boxing Training, Camel/Elephant Riding or Trekking, Canopy Walking or Tree Top Walking, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Conservation or Charity Work (educational & environmental - working with hand tools only), Cycle Touring, Dune and Wadi Bashing, Falconry, Football, Go Karting, Hiking (over 2000 metres, but under 6000 metres), Hockey, Horse Riding (no polo, hunting or jumping), Hot Air Ballooning, Jet Boating, Jet Skiing, Kayaking, Motorcycling (under 50cc) - no racing, Mud Buggying, Paintballing, Passenger (including private or small aircraft or helicopter), Rowing, Sea Kayaking. Target Rifle Shooting, Trekking (over 2000 metres but under 6000 metres), Windsurfing & Yachting (racing & crewing) inside territorial waters, Zip Lining.

Erm, not sure what the last mentioned "zip lining" is all about, sounds painful, but Yachting (racing and crewing) is definitely covered. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I had to make a claim for clothing after the Azores-Gib trip.......... long story! They tried to avoid paying but after about the fourth exchange of correspondence they realised I wasn't giving up and paid out.

But, yes, on medical claims I understand they are very good.............. you just have to persevere on other claims.

So if you cross the channel from Portsmouth to Cherbourg you will only be covered for about half the passage ? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
The reality is that no insurance policy will cover the rescue costs of being evacuated from a boat mid channel due to injury or heart attack!

The RYA policy covers you once ashore.

I am concerned that the exclusion on the policy mentioned above includes "rowing" so knowing the way they ALL always try to wriggle out of any claim you would not be covered rowing ashore in your dinghy!! Marina berths only for you my boy!!

snowcard say that they cover rescue from an offshore emergency.... havent checked the small print... will have a look.

The policy I mentioned is a low cost travel insurance which is not tailor made for sailing but will cover most people's sailing.

It covers any territorial waters not just UK so I think it is good value for many sailors.

If you want global insurance cover at low cost just wear a St Christopher /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
We have found our Egg global annual policy is suitable for us chartering for flotilla or bareboats in Malaysia and the Caribbean. We renewed for the past 4 years after having rang them to double check the cover. Very competitive too!
We do not have any other connection with Egg.
