Does anyone know of an app that provides a dictionary of yachting terms in say three or four different languages?

Last year I struggled with Swedish chart books, using a few sheets of Swe/Eng terms provided by the Cruising Association.
This year I might need similar in French, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Turkish, which would be altogether too many sheets of paper!

That site is not responding ATM, so I don't know what price they cite. But the Bloomsbury URL I gave claims to be 30% cheaper than someone.

And I'm aware that the OP wanted an app, hence my mention of an e-book, which I take it would be equivalent. Surely there must be some CA members here who could suggest it. Should be an automated process, plus some marketing...

Being an owner of the aforementioned publication, an electronic and therefore presumably searchable version would be a vast improvement.

A language X / language Y dictionary requires 2 indices (X->Y and Y->X). For N languages you'd need, if my rusty maths is correct, N!/(N-2)!, or 12 indices for 4 languages. For 10 languages that's 90 indices (my sums may be wrong, but you get the idea).

As that's rather impractical, the CA book doesn't have an alphabetical index, but instead works a bit like a phrase book, having category headings and then listing the same term in various languages across the page. Unfortunately it's very often not at all obvious what category the word you want fits into which is why I find this book really hard to use.

I like books. I don't like reading stuff on a screen. But this is one application where an app would definitely be the better product.

It's not quite that bad, because it's not intended for someone who wants to translate Turkish into Danish or whatever. Published by the Cruising Association, it's presumably intended for British yachtsmen, so only needs to translate English into 10 languages and 10 languages into English.

Thanks guys. Looks like I can buy from amazon, download onto my Kindle (Christmas pressie from SWMBO), and access at any time on board, maybe ashore if we anticipate a need.

Thanks for the offer and fine idea though it is, sounds a bit of a faff to ultimately end up with something in the appropriate format easily retrievable on your phone. Besides, once I start scanning things in I might not be able to stop. OCR is suspiciously close to OCD.

Fair point. I was momentarily distracted by my dreams of pan-european cultural sensitivity forgetting that many members of the cruising fraternity still resent the metric system. Still 18 indices (one of the 10 is English).

I don't see how you can download an electronic version. The Amazon page offers a link to suggest such a thing to the publisher, which rather implies it does not yet exist...
