mud berth on walton backwaters

Dear East Coasters (font of all knowledge)

- I have finished filming on the Blackwater and am now ready to tear myself away from my comfortable mud berth at Brightlingsea. I see from Google earth that there is a place with mud berths just around the corner from Titchmarsh marina - (beside a caravan park of impressive dimensions and fairly close to town) does anyone keep a boat there and do you think they could accommodate my boat on a walk on mud berth for a few weeks? She draws less than 2 foot and it would be good to be able to get on and off the mooring even at neaps.

PS... enjoy the Backwaters....

IMHO, it is one of the nicest places on the whole East Coast.... not that I want to build it up or anything....

PPS... if you are around on 4th July, then we'll all be on the beach at Stone Point, just by the entrance to the Twizzle.... carbonising some meat and swapping sea stories around a fire on the beach... be lovely if you could join us so that we could thank you in person for your vids!

PPPS... whatever you do, take the boat around the island (Horsey Island)... the widlife is marvellous, it is rarely visited, so far more enjoyable, and there are one or two absolutely georgeous hidey holes if you want to spend a night in complete solitude...
 
There are two boatyards at Walton-on-the-Naze, just around the corner from Tichmarsh, where there are mud berths.

There is also "The Pond" which is a basin with a flap door. Access is for about an hour at high water, by arrangement with Bedwells Boatyard who manage the moorings in the basin.

Bedwells are on 01255 675873. Richard normally deals with the basin and their mud berths and also their swinging moorings and I would talk to them first.

Halls Boatyard in the other side of the basin, nearer to the twon. They have mudberths and swinging moorings. Their number is 01255 675596.

Walton is OK once you get to know your way around. The Victory (pub) is run by a chap who is crew on the Walton lifeboat and the lifeboat crew tend to frequent the establishment (all drinking in moderation etc. etc. before comments are made!). The chineese almost next door is OK as is the fish and chip shop. The Tia resteraunt just up the road towards the sea is also OK.

If you are in the pond you can use the facilities of the Yacht Club, which has good cheap beer and very good food.

Mr Cramp is spot on, the pond at W&FYC should suit you provided they can fit you in, they appeared to have spaces when I was there, the mud berths you refer to appeared full, noone seems to leave them?!
 
Ok, just that when I looked at a chartlet it showed the Twizzle as the stretch up river from the Marina and the stretch past stone point as Walton Channel.
 
Will you be there this weekend? - we may be coming up from the Crouch - fleeting visit though, up on the tide Saturday, back on the tide Sunday. We'll anchor in Hamford water, somewhere - wave if you see Vela Rose!

Lovely place (and you can't see the caravans most of the time). Enjoy it.
 
Ta. It's a bit crucial as we're planning to run up on the beach rather than anchor. Choose the wrong beach and we'll have a long walk /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Richard from Bedwells has a mud berth for me - £30 for July.
I will have to paddle in and out because of the mooring lines though. Sounds perfect.

I plan to poke my pudgy little bow into every nook and crannie of the orwell and stour and make a start on the backwaters - but what a lot of crinkly bits there are to explore

I was at school at Wolverstone and was also a member of the Shotley sea scouts so it will be lovely getting to know the area again. Love that East Coast mud.
