This is probably a very stupid question. But I can't find the answer in the manual or the parts explosion etc. and to get it right 1st time will save me some time.

An MD2020B MS2B gearbox:

Is it as simple that if the cable link moves forward, forward gear is selected, and if it moves aft, reverse is selected?

I think I agree with pvb. I push the lever forward and it pivots and pulls the cable backwards and thus pulls it back at the gearbox end. Best I go look at tomorrow!

My understanding is that if you push the link forward the sleeve/cone engages the lower gear and the output rotates in the opposite direction to the input, and if you pull it back it rotates with the input.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but what effect that has on your boat will depend on whether your prop is rh or lh.

Btw, did you know there is a workshop manual available on Manualslib.com ?

This will depend on the handing of your prop.

Assuming the construction is similar to that of the MS3B they will operate at full power and same reduction ratios in either direction.

Assuming also the box is on the engine, spin it up on the starter in gear one way or the other and see which way the prop turns.

Just to complicate matters, the Volvo Penta MS2 manual illustrates the change mechanism being assembled in two ways! One way gives forward when the lever is moved forward; the other way gives reverse when the lever is moved forwards. So I guess the answer is that it depends how your box has been assembled! Trial and error.

Thanks for all the answers, unless I hear a definite opinion otherwise, I'll connect this way to start with, as it apears to have the best chance of being correct.

Then as suggested, I'll test with the starter motor once the electrics are connected.

Check the input shaft splines closely for wear. They look good in pic but....
Severe wear on these splines was a problem on some 2000 series engine. Not sure if VP cured it on 2010,2020,2030
My VP 2003/MS2B turns LH looking at gearbox output & prop is LH.

Only 2000 series engines and only up to engine number 2300059128
