MPs and Peers from all political parties, including several shadow ministers and senior officials, dropped by to chat with staff from the RYA and BMF at a joint reception held at the Houses of Parliament.

The event, sponsored by Richard Ottaway MP, gave MPs and Peers the opportunity to meet with the two organisations and discuss issues effecting the boating community and industry from the Marine and Costal Access Bill; including marine conservation zones, coastal paths and maintenance dredging, to E-borders, alcohol limits and Inland Waterways.

RYA Legal and Government Affairs Manager Gus Lewis said: "The reception was an important event for us as it gave us the opportunity to meet face to face with key policy makers, and represent the interests of recreational boaters.

"We are constantly in discussion with Government departments on varying issues and it is therefore important that we maintain and expand the profile of the two organisations in Parliament."

After a few words from the events host, Mr Ottaway, a keen sailor himself, the floor was handed over to Andrew Simpson MBE, gold medallist in the Star class at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Andrew gave an entertaining insight in to his career path in sailing from free sailing sessions down at Datchet Water, to his hopes and aspirations for 2012. He was also handed round his Olympic gold medal for inspection.

"It will be fantastic to have the Olympics in this country, and obviously the wish would be for sailing to medal in all classes. This maybe near impossible, but is the dream", said Andrew.

Sorry to quote the story as a whole, but WTF?!

1) Ok - it's good that BMF/RYA are meeting with the government ... but in the second paragraph it indicated that the "highest" level of MP was shadow ministers - so the "real" government weren't interested then ...?!

2) Don't the BMF or RYA have paths to the government to discuss these matters anyway? I thought this was standard stuff!!

3) Reception allowed them to meet face 2 face with the "key policy makers" ?? Eh? Don't they know who they are?!

Then incomes Andrew Simpson MBE and gives a little speech about the Lympics ... now - don't get me wrong - 2012 is important too ... but wtf has that got to do with the Marine and Costal (not my spelling error) Access Bill and alcohol limits?!!

Seems a bit pointless talking to the opposition MP's, why not the Ministers in Government?
I dislike the modern Olympics and the whole concept of all professional 'sport'. What fun it was to struggle as an athlete not wanting to seek monitary rewards!
I think most politicians are out to gain all for themselves and have been smirking at the rest of us for decades.

Worth talking to the opposition coz this lot ain't gonna be around much longer.

The New Statesman (aka Labour's house magazine) is predicting that after the next General Election, Labour will spend many years in the political wilderness. It also reports than Prezza's 'Go Fourth' (for a fourth term, geddit?) campaign to get Labour's heavy metal out talking to the voters has become known as 'Come Fourth' in Labour HQ.

The BMF?

Those stalwarts of boater's interests?
Just look at the way they stuck up for us after the Peters Opal debacle.

The RYA?

More of the same -to coin a phrase - 'what have they done/achieved lately'?
Oppose the the abolition of red diesel? Nope
Oppose compulsory licensing? Yep, but only because it suits them. If licensing became compulsory it would be the end of the goose that lays the golden eggs - RYA training certs.
E-borders? Nope - well, they said we should have the option to comply via SMS. Ta very much.

The only side the RYA is on is the RYA's /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Spot on!......RYA???......Tossers /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I've not renewed for those reasons...

The RYA have proved themselves to be singularly ineffective on the two or three big issues that affect me most directly....

And Fireball's PR copy just about sums it up..... if it ain't in the racing rules of sailing, they ain't interested.....

As ever I'm amazed at the bad feeling towards the RYA. As far as I can work out they manage a great training scheme, represent our interests to whoever needs to know, provide a font of knowledge on any subject from buying a boat to paperwork for going to France, and on top of all that run the best Olympic campaign in the country.
At a cost to you (if you don't join) of nothing.

Whilst you may not agree with their stance on things like red diesel, you will find that a lot of "boaters", myself included, normally find ourselves in broad agreement with their stance. And if you don't agree, join and tell them!

I've no personal axe to grind against the RYA as I have benefitted in attending courses designed by them.
I am on the committee of an inshore club which has just decided not to pay our RYA affiliation fee due to the fact that we could see no advantage for us to do so and we are struggling a bit financially.

In what way do they offer a font of knowledge?

If you mean via their website.... then its utter rubbish.... its so high level in detail that most of it is meaningless..... and its only in the last 12 months that its operated at a speed that makes it anywhere near useable....

And they don't represent my interests at all...

Eborders, Red Diesel, DSC over-use by the authorities, ever reducing anchorages covered in moorings, charges for anchoring in natural harbours, VAT receipt fiasco, etc etc etc..... they haven't had a single success on a single one of these..... Now.... if there was an Olympic gold to be won from cruising on the East Coast, I suspect that I'd do a darned site better...

I raced dinghies for many years, and have many friends with kids that participate in national training programmes in various classes.... they have money thrown at them.... regular free coaching, ribs paid for, ribs provided, support for training camps, dietary advice, fitness training, etc etc.... I don't begrudge this, and certainly appreciate the Olympic success we have in the sport.... but it seems completely out of kilter with support for cruising.... where we get a few crummy pages on a website, and half a dozen RYA reps schmoozing with politicians who have no authority or power.....

It'll be a cold day in hell before that lot get any money out of me!

As a non-sailing youngster I used to be very impressed with the selection of very nice cars in the RYA car park when their office was in Woking. Never understood why a sailing association would be so far from the sea! I would never waste my money with them.

You really should look a little further than the part of your anatomy that you often refer to.

The facts of modern life are that it is impossible for minorities to impose their will on actions of the majority. Red Diesel is an EU issue. Do not rant just because "we" are unable to change an EU ruling. In fact the compromise puts us in a better position over the price of diesel than in other states. This is of course ignoring the fact that red diesel at lower tax rates was intended to provide lower costs to commercial users such as farmers and fishermen and extension to leisure boating was only ever an anomoly. Why should big MOBOs benefit from this? For a typical yacht doing 100 hours a year the additional cost is not much more than £20 a year - get real, why should you get so worked up about this?

Who is the "us" that the BMF is supposed to protect and did not? Where in their constitution is there anything that says they are responsible for the fraudulent actions of their members? Why do you always have to find somebody to "blame" for doing, or failing to do something that you think they ought to have done?

What is the RYA "side" that it is supposed to be on, that is different from the collective interests of all its members?

If you want to change what the RYA does, become a member, stand for election and make your voice heard. If you don't you stay as you are - a freeloader gaining the benefits without the cost.

[/ QUOTE ] I think you'll find that's his point - there is no benefit ....

From my point - the RYA are supposed to be the voice of boating in the UK ... yet here they are, hobnobbing with those who are not in power - so what about talking to those that are going to push E-Borders so far that the next lot won't go back on it? I see no reports or news on that ??

Nowhere - my point was that we should not be excited by or expect any benefit from the fact that the BMF met with some MPs.

Maybe, just maybe, I have been a member in the past unable to make his voice heard and sick and tired of being lectured to when complaints about the lack of progress on particular issues was once again dismissed - 'You have to know the big picture'.
When asked about the 'big picture' the blue blazers were very, very vague.
In my experience the RYA gives it's members the mushroom treatment: keep them in the dark and feed them manure.

When pointing out that maybe the teaching standards of certain academies 'flogging' (for want of a better word) RYA training certificates deserved some scrutiny letters were ignored/'lost' even when sent recorded delivery.

with a few resersvations I agree. a curates egg. but keep snapping at their heels. credit where its due they have focused on the olympics training. It would be interesting to hear how the medal winners assess the RYA input.
and whats the alternative. buy a lcence from the dvla, post office.town hall.brusselles/paris/
