Mowed down by a racing fleet

We were crewing on a small-ish (<25 foot?) boat with a blue and white spinnaker on finals day, and suddenly we were faced with a fleet of twenty boats, all hell-bent on making the next mark, none of which looked like they would make any space to let us through on our original course.

Amazingly, we got through without serious incident, despite the fact that there really didn't seem to be any gaps to go through. It just has to have been someone from here out to prove a point regarding colregs or racing, surely?

For heavens sake, this subject has been thrashed to death and way beyond any possible level of justification. You werent mowed down, you werent hit - so what was the problem?

All you are doing is throwing some red meat to the grump old men on here, something you could just as easily achieve by quoting a daily wail headline. In short its a troll intentional or not.

No I think its making a very serious point. Race officers should be aware of the environment when setting courses and setting the starting gun.

No idea why it won't work for you. I've had people comment from the UK, so that's not an issue. Are you travelling now? Maybe all the full-frontal nudity while I shower in the cockpit has finally got it banned.

I have sussed it now
Go into you tube & search on
Minitransat 529
Interesting that you had to do 1000 qualifier!!
I was under the impression that most sh races need 500
Re the food. I use "B Well" which is ok but as i hate chicken the range is limited
Whose food do you recommend?

For freeze dried I liked Fuzion, Real Turmat, some of the Travellunch range and (I think) Expedition Foods. All available here.

If you are going to duck behind me with only 1m clearance, 'til the very last moment you will appear to me & my inexperienced helm that you could/will T-Bone us or at least run into my stern.

Depending on the wind/situation we may luff up or bear away. Whatever, we will almost certainly lose way.

In the ensuing panic there is a every possibility you will hit us.

Then plastic v steel will come into play so once calm has been restored we will pick up survivors & claim salvage .:)

If you are not competent to follow the basics of the colregs, i.e. standing on, should you be out there?

It shouldn't exactly be news that racing boats will often pass close to things they have to give way to.
When you drive on the motorway, how close are the cars in the next lane passing you?
And they are going rather faster than a yacht.

But I would give an 'L' or 'P' plate much greater room.
You can't tell on a boat how experienced they are. It would help when getting so close to a yacht that you intend to 'just' miss that you communicated that to them as you got closer.

I often do that. "Would you mind gathering your ensign in for a moment - I'm planning to pass just behind you and don't want it to catch on the forestay." :D:D:D

While doing a helicopter exercise with our Mersey ALB a fleet of gp14's heading out to a start line decided to cross in front of us .

Cue lots of shouting from the cox & 2 crew winched back up as the helo & the alb "went about"

Not really
Gives them a bit of practice plus teaches them to take a good look round them when needing room for training
A fleet of GP's do not suddenly appear. They all sail out to a start line over a short period & it is not hard to see something building. It is also pretty obvious when the race has begun. 99%of Races start by sailing to windward so the direction is pretty obvious as well. Once the race gets going they all spread out a bit. Then it can be difficult predicting direction
The point of my note being that it just needs "awareness" on behalf of any other craft in the vicinity. That is just good sailing

Thanks for the link
Perhaps i should have started a separate thread!!

So apologies to other forumites

Just very interested in how you cope on these races
I have just done a S H lap of England & really suffered from lack of energy
Wpuld like to know how you feed yourself to counteract this

I've already sent a PM to you on another subject, so happy to answer any questions by PM if you like, rather than drift this thread any further!

The GP's came from behind a breakwater - they had the choice of holding off till we had passed , going astern or crossing infront - the main concern wasnt so much collision as the downdraft capzing them.

But I suppose in order to be a good racer you have to be singleminded !

Chopper must have been pretty low not to see them over the breakwater?

It wasnt the fact that we hadnt seen them, when doing transfers the helo paces the alb at about 30ft, it was the judgement call made by the racers (who were not even racing )
