I have heard that it is possible to access the net using a bluetooth mobile phone linked to a laptop in Spain utilizing a Movistar PAYG calling a number something like 5531 at reasonable rates. Has anyone any information please ?

Not quite what you are asking, but we used Tempest Telecom as an ISP which calls a local number on Movistar, giving a reliable, reasonably cheap but slow connection. Found quite a few wifi hotspots in Spain, both quicker and cheaper than via bluetooth mobile link.

This might help:
If you've got a PCMCIA slot on your laptop then Movistar (Vodafone, Amena) will sell you a GPRS card that takes a SIM where the number is dedicated to internet service. Cost about 100€'s.
Like most service providers GPRS services are not cheap to use - if you choose one where you pay for the upload/download activity then turn off pictures, send in plain text, etc.
If no one else answers the Q. then I'll do a bit of research into the Movistar number.

We tend to use wifi whenever possible and are presently hooked up to a private network at Almerimar marina. The marina service is expensive and iffy.

To answer your question, we have used Gonuts4free in Spain which offers a dial up service (also in UK). We also use Budgetdialup as this is more international.

I gave up on GPRS because it was slow, and cost the earth in the UK. I do not have enough Spanish to get it working in Spain! The Movistar agent had never heard of it! But get away with pay as you go on our local Movistar number, which does not cost us a lot.
