Hi all,

In July I'll be sailing my Westerly Berwick from her current berth in Milford Haven to Debbage in Ipswich, as being based in the Midlands means the trek to Milford is getting a little tiring. So, once I get there, what places should be on my 'must visit' list? It'll be mostly weekend sailing for the rest of this year, and being a bilge keeler I'm not averse to drying her out on anchorages or moorings.

Cheers,

Dennis

Hello,
Welcome to the East coast. That plonker Sailorman is always going to finish off by saying Belgium to stir up a red diesel debate however to be fair he has flagged up a good 10 years worth of cruising for you:)
I am in a marina in the centre of Ipswich so if you are on board on your own then send me a message and I Will buy you a pint. On board every other weekend. From the midlands too and Catthorpe is nearly finished hoorah...

Cheers, Col.

+1 for Catthorpe! You'll become expert at listening to radio reports and deciding whether to divert via Northampton and market Harborough or A426, Loughborough and North Kilworth if A14 blocked. Unfortunately much more difficult further East!

Why not join the East Coast Group of the Westerly Owners Association? You will make friends and join in cruises. More information at http://www.westerly-owners.co.uk/associationGroup.php?localgroup_id=EC If you are not a member of the Association you should join as it will be your best return on such a small investment.

If you want a slightly longer sail, you should consider the River Medway as there are plenty of places to try. You could try anchoring at Harty Ferry on the Swale or Stangate Creek. You can pick up a mooring at Queenborough, in Gillingham or Cookham Reach. Alternatively there are marinas (both via a lock with full tial access) at Gillingham and Chatham. If you like naval history there is Chatham Historic Dockyard and Upnor Castle, or a short ride away is Rochester with its castle and cathedral.

Yes, I am a member and currently belong to the Bristol Channel group. I was planning to switch to the East Coast group once arrive in the East Coast in July, but thanks for the reminder.

Not to be pedantic, but Gillingham Marina is nor full tide access... averages HW+/-4 as I recall

Correct (my ECP :encouragement: says +/-4.5hrs approx), also Chatham operates 24hrs (apart from perhaps short intervals at top of very high springs) but Gillingham doesn't.

As a member of WOA, you will get plenty of advice and guidance, but I still recommend you put a copy of the latest edition of East Coast Pilot on your wish list for coming birthday / Christmas. Using that will put you in full control of what some describe as "tricky" entrances to the Deben and Ore.

The one addition I would make to Sailor man's excellent list is Southwold, perhaps for a long weekend. A bit further north than the Ore, but still a daysail from Harwich and a beautiful town to visit by sea.

You'll soon be thinking half a metre under the keel is more than enough.
