Moving to Gouvia

Just a little update on the weather (this year) I have to agree with Charles.
I live on Kefalonia, October was quite rainy at times, but still hot, ok a bit further South than Corfu. November has been fantastic! I have been in shorts (not drinks) every day, people are still swimming in the sea, the temperatures have been around 22c/25c every day. However, looking at the cold air over the Alps, Switzerland and to the North of us, I would expect as soon as we get a run of Northerlies the temps will drop rapid. Brrrrr, dont do cold!

Hmm did you get that very heavy rain last night?
 
My better half tell me that we had thunder last night (and rain) If our house set on fire at night the only time I would know is when the fireman told me! I do not wake up! At 10 this morning, the sun was out and I was chopping trees down, sunny all day. I will see what the Greek Micheal Fish has to say tonight. Forecast on ET3 at 9.40 (Greek TV)
 
Thanks for all the replies, far more than I expected.
Just 1 point, I could no more sell the boat than the wife! We've had her from new and over the years have learnt all of her strange ways (the boats strange ways not the wives!) twin rudders can be fun at slow speeds. She's fairly well set up for med use, windless, fridge etc. Would just need a bimini. I'm not concerned about the size, were not going to be liveaboards just 1/2 week holidays, can't be more difficult than holidays on the Hamble.

I've really set my heart on Gouvia, just need to convince the rest of the family, something I didn't expect was the kids (12 & 15) concerns about moving, need to spend some time convincing them!
 
to help convince the wife and kids, You could mention the marina swimming pool and bar, the dive centre, on site restaurants (actually pretty good by marina standards) wifi at several cafe/bar locations, laundry, car and scooter hire, croquet(?) etc etc.

Just don't go swimming in summer around sunset. The pool at Gouvia gets a haze of mozzies about 400mm thick and dense enough to make breathing a challenge around that time :)

We did one evening. Thought we'd got the pool to ourselves. Well there were no humans!

for every silver lining, there is always a cloud!
Personally never had a problem with mozzies in Gouvia, but actually don't hang round the pool much so will take yoyr word for it
 
read this link really useful , i have looked at gouvia in some detail , i have a 40 ft boat , am thinking having sailed it bangor to lymington in may 2010 that a big sail is a big pain ,,,,so thinking about loading it at southampton down to greece and sail from their looking circa £10k , the aggro for me looks to be flights thompson , easy , monarch , any others?
If i fly to Athens what are my options?
any other ideas the boat is in lymington ( no dont want to sell and buy another ! ).....any ideas help appreciated

Quickest way to get the boat there is truck to the South of France then sail. Around £5k for the truck and it is about 1000 miles by sea, but enough stopping poimts to do it in short hops. Although delivery by sea looks attractive costs are very similar once you have allowed for fuel, marina fees and transport for crew - plus the wear and tear on the boat.

The sea costs are higher than that at around £12k to Piraeus plus cradle, loading and unloading - and you are a week away from Corfu.
 
Hi we have posted a few questions before, we are still in the prep stage for our move to Greece hopefully in the summer.

I was wondering how good the wifi is in the marina?

I heard from a American friend of mine about a luxury tax payable to the Greek goverment, i was lead to believe this didn't count for EU yachts but i can't find out much info about it apart from what i have read on this website.

Still unsure of this tax, however your boat is not due any tax, due to its size.
The WiFi in the marina is OK. If, I consider a little expensive.

This tax thing has been going around for some time and its still not implemented, well saying that I have heard some people in the past were asked for it, havent heard a word since we have been there.

For the purposes of the law it is irrelevant whether the the boat is VAT paid or not. The tax will apply to all boats that are in Greek waters for the qualifying period. However, if it is a sailing boat the lower limit is 15m so it won't affect you. As suggested above it has not been implemented - its target is rich Greeks who own large boats but don't pay any taxes, not specifically visitors.
