Hi Guys
I have a vivacity 20 which i have been restoring for 5 years now:redface-new:, I have just purchased a second hand 8HP mariner two stroke, can any one tell me what speed it will push my vivacity 20 along at, Trying to work out if it will motor 50 nautical miles and how long this will take . I will be going from burry port to Milford haven, Alternatively does any one know how much it would cost to move it by road (45-50 miles), its on a trailer but not sure how road worthy it is.
Thanks in advance

You should be able to make 4kn provided their isn't too much of a chop. If you can use the tide it will speed you up significantly. Why not use the sails?

Hi Ghostlymoron
thanks for your reply, I was thinking of moving the boat but the rigging will not be complete, the reason being more is being taken from the boat than I am putting on!! on reflection I will try and get someone to move it by road, I will be going to the possible new site to check it out later this week.
Regards Robin

I had a similarly sized Westerly, and both a 4hp Yamaha and a Seagull Forty were quite capable of shoving her along at 4kt. The limiting factor is waves - having the prop come out the water regularly slows you right down and is none too healthy for the engine either. If you have a nice weather, 50 miles should be easily do-able in a day, though with the outboard running for all that time in a small boat you'll be saying "What?" to people for a fair while afterwards. BTDTGTTS.

I'd strongly advise having a backup means of propulsion, by the way, particularly since the Mariner outboard is new to you. Sails, if you have 'em, or borrow a backup outboard to take along. Even a 2hp one will get you to port, somewhere, if the main one fails.

Hi Jumbleduck
Thanks for your reply, on reflection Getting it moved by road is possibly the best option at the moment and will look into costs
Many thanks regards Robin

My Vivacity 21 would bowl along nicely at 6kn through flat water with a Johnson 5hp. I would be planning on 4kn if i were you and only doing it with a good forecast and favorable tides

JumbleDuck, what is BTDTGTTS?

OP, I would expect the 8hp outboard to burn a gallon of fuel per hour and take some spare 2 stroke just in case.

As others have said probably in the region of 4knts but the noise would probably drive you nuts, why not take your time over a weekend and sail, if you didn't want to travel in the dark you could do it in a couple of day sails. What's tenby like as a stop over? Seems about half way.

Just a thought, I'm sure you want to stretch her legs after 5 yrs restoring 

Hiab would be about £600ish

If you do motor, don't push it.

At medium revs my little boat will do 4 knt. If I thrash the engine it might get to 5 but will be way noisier and burn far more fuel for little gain (only done that once to outrun a squall)

If motoring a long way an autohelm will let you get away from the noise for a bit and keep watch somewhere quieter.

It can get quite lumpy going across the bay and around the corner. However, pick a nice day, choose your time to coincide with the tide and you should do it easily enough. Start looking at xcweather.co.uk a few days before hand to get the trend and bibs your wotsit!

Thanks for all your comments, sails can not be used as I need fixed and running rigging due to someone relieving me of mine!! which is why I want to move, looks as if its going to be by road, I really want to see her in the water this year,

Thanks for your reply and weather tip , at Present looks as if it's going to be by road unless I can get the rigging sorted out sooner than planned.

We've got a Viv 20 moored at Pwhlleli and have done a few trips. Longest motor ride was from Treaddur Bay to Nefyn about 20 - 25 miles against 20 knot winds. We only just made it with about half a litre of fuel left - even though we set out with "enough"! :o We have a 6hp Yamaha 2 stroke - it uses about 4-5 litres an hour, but that can vary a lot depending on the tide/wind/swell. I wouldn't attempt it in one go, unless you can sail as well. As mentioned your ears will be ringing after 20 miles never mind 50! Make a weekend of it, pick the wind and tide. Our longest "trip" was about 35 miles, doesn't sound much when you're used to nipping down the road in your car! But that took about 12 hours....

Have just done an extended trip on a dismasted Achilles 24 with a Yamaha 4hp two stroke - transom hung, rather than cockpit well. Noise was far far quieter than I thought - genuinely no problem at all. Engine ran routine for 10 hours a day without hiccup. 4 kts easily, but then I was keen to not push the engine hard. About 1.25 litres per hour in my engine. Presumably one can just scale this figure up? I would presume with an 8hp and an autopilot, you could waterski behind it.

J/k. But I'm not sure you need the extra hp as much as backup propulsion, as others have said.
