Rather than take a delivery skipper or scratch crew we are looking at getting the boat transported to Greece or Turkey (by road or see) in order for us to spend the next couple of years in the Eastern Med. Has anyone any info about this, we have been quoted £12.5k to ship from Southampton to Istanbul, but we dont need to go that far or, I think, spend that much. Any experiences gratefully received. Just come back the sailing aftre a break and don't have many contacts or up-to-date knowledge in this area.

Know what You mean

You did not mentioned the firm you contacted for the quote however I'll confirm that it is not cheap. I've inquired about Med to Carib and it requires a stiff drink while sitting to open the quote.
Certainly getting a couple of quotes (if you can) helps

Option - Might want to see if You could get it part way i.e.; Lisbon, Gibraltar which could save some $$$ - OR on the other end. It appears Genoa is used by several firms to arrive & depart

If you have any other firms, pls share.
Good Luck

It was Sevenstar that gave us this quote, I am hoping we might get a better deal face-to-face at the Southampton Boat Show. Will post here if I get any more info.

Try This

Met cruisers (USA) last year in Scotland and they used Peters & May to ship their boat back to the states - it was trucked out of Scotland to somewhere in England - then shipped all the way to CA.
They were pleased overall - Might be another firm to try

Previous owner of my boat had her trucked from south of France to Calais when taking her to Plymouth to sell.
Would trucking across France and sailing the rest help you?

Alternative route

You could take the canals through Holland up the Rhine, the. down the Danube...

Apparently it takes two weeks Rotterdam to the Black Sea when going steady like a barge......

And you get to see bits of Europe that are of the usual sailing grounds...

Far and away the best route is overland to Slovenia and sail down the Adriatic. This is the route used by the German builders such as Bavaria and Hanse. You can avoid Italy (which is hugely expensive) and can start from either a channel port in France or Holland, but UK transporters will pick up from South Coast. There are excellent yards in Slovenia and easy access for you via Trieste airports. Likely to be up to £8k including handling and you could start your adventure with a leisurely cruise down the Croatian coast or go straight down to Corfu.

An alternative if you want to cruise the middle part of the med is SofF - again a regular route so easy to get transport, but a longer haul to eastern Med.

If you do change your mind and wish to consider employing a professional crew then we would be glad to help... Feel free to give me a call and we can discuss your options.

All the best,

Pete
