Moving boat from UK to Greece

We are currently trying to move our Birchwood 37 from York, England to somewhere in the dodecanese. Going by road seems to be a problem, has anyone used deck cargo for this? If htis fails we would be temted to use the Rhine = Danube route - can anyone give me any advice on this route?

Deck cargo is perfectly possible, though sometimes to a port a few hundred miles away so your boat needs to be ready to do a longish trip immediately upon unloading. I think Athens is a commonly used port. Cost would be something like €20k. Several brokers organise space on the ships, eg peters+may, yachtshipping ltd (=wainwright group) and some others. Yes, Southampton/Piraeus is a weekly service. Last quote I had (the other way) from PPS was about £13k for a 37 footer plus cradle.

The alternative is road to Isola or similar in Slovenia then cruise down the Adriatic and through the Corinth Canal. Road transport about £5k. Sea trip about two weeks leisurely cruising. Great project if you have the time/expertise

I think the Danube route is achievable, but it does involve lots of commercial traffic, fast currents and varying depths... It would be a spectacular journey though, and very rewarding if you have the time.

I agree with a previous post about delivery to Slovenia or Italy by road and then onwards by sea.

I specialise in delivery by sea, and would be glad to help if you decide to do it that way.

I assume you are discounting the usual route down through the French canals to S.of France then Italy west coast & Ionian.

You have a number of options and I can certainly recommend the two companies we use regularly to move our and our client's boat when required.

The first is a road transport company, Shoreline Transport. It is run by the excellent and very knowledgable Terry Ollerton who has been moving boats for a long time and so knows what is what. His website is here and he can be reached on 07836 789083 and is about as helpful as they come.

Carrying on with this thread, I am thinking of taking a Maxum 5.7mts bowrider to Corfu, what do I need to know / do?

My thought is to get it on an SSR but I do not have the original VAT, indeed no documents showing VAT paid, for the boat. It was purchased privately in the UK.
