I'd like to be able to download movies from the net and put them on a stick to watch on the boat. I'm happy to pay for the privilege but I'd like to not have the hassle of buying the DVD and then having to copy it onto the pc and stick. Is there a site where this is possible?

All these suggestions are for streaming movies which isn't what I have in mind, but thanks anyway. Looks like it's I'm going to have to get the DVDs and convert them. I don't do pirate downloads.

If you bought the DVD, would downloading the same movie be breach of copyright? I suppose so, but then would not ripping the DVD to a stick not also be a breach?

There are quite a few older films - out of copyright - legitimately on YouTube or the Internet Archive. I don't think there is any way of getting modern stuff legitimately, though. I buy the DVDs and then rip with Handbrake.

No they aren't, iTunes downloads a copy of the movie.

You could also try buying movies which include ultraviolet - that allows a copy to be downloaded to many devices for offline viewing. For a while I was buying bluray disks and didn't have a player for them but used the downloads instead.

Neither of my suggestions were for streaming, you can buy a physical digital copy on both Amazon Instant Video or Itunes.

What aboout the good old days when you could record from the TV to video cassettes?

You still can. I have a TV dongle from Pinnacle, and the software can record digital TV to memory cache as and when you wish. However, you must be "watching" the TV program as you record it. No automatic record while you are supping beer at the pub.

Edit This is on a laptop not a video recorder.

I bought my parents a Toshiba DVD recorder/player with built in hard drive and VHS recorder. It records off-air to DVD, HDD or VHS, and copies from or to VHS to HDD or DVD. It has the EPG so they can even program it themselves!

I believe in UK it is now permitted to create a copy of a dvd you own to play on a different device

download vuze (google it)
install
enter film you want
select from list
download

or www.torrentz.eu but then you need a client such as vuze for the actual download (Torrentz is only a search engine)
