Movement of Boom

can anyone advise is it nesesary to be able to swing the boom through 180 deg ie 90 deg port to 90 deg starboard

I mean, it's not necessary. It is however nice to be able get the boom far forward for sailing on a dead run or for sailing by the lee. But 90 degrees will not be practicable even if your shrouds are in line with your mast, since resting the boom against the shrouds causes unnecessary strain and wear and tear.
