Move up, Move up

The only trouble with box moorings, is that any visitor, not used to them, seem to think that any adjoining boat is positioned there as a fender for their benefit. As they arrived between 2 posts they do not have to put any fenders out once past them

Ive only ever encountered box mooringson a couple of visits to Venice and they are a bit daunting if you are not used to them. I’m not sure what to do with fenders - in one marina they recommended a plank outside fenders and in the other the posts were too close together for the boat to fit into without removing the fenders.

It is not unusual to have to take the fenders off to get through the gap as some posts were installed in the days of narrower boats than the current AWB
I set up a web site for our mooring holders & we have a cruise in company scheduled in August to the Dutch canals. A few asked about box moorings so in 2019 Ii went to Middleburgh to try out one single handed.
I put a page on the website about how I managed it
Box mooring
There are , of course some excellent PBO articles on the subject if one can find them

I can happily report that like all moorings, they get easy with practice.

Can be found in the Med in some places, Sotogrande springs to mind.....but not usually for visitors. Local boats have the posts well padded and a line each side from the post to the dock to stop the boat moving sideways on the current.

Further afield, some Caribbean marinas have them eg Jolly Harbour in Antigua. Only a mind concentrator if they give you a box a lot longer than your boat, can gget a bit sporting in a cross wind. However places like that will have a marinero in a rib to assist. (y)
