Mounting burgee on pulpit rail

I want one of the sailing type wind indicator burgees mounted on my pulpit rail (to show wind direction when helming from indoors) - I've seen some mounted with a pukka rail mount, but can't seem to find the mounts for sale anywhere...

Where please?

View from lower helm:

Want the burgee mounted centre of view, on horizontal crosspiece, hence needs to be small dinghy type burgee to minimise viewing hindrance...
 
The flag is not going to help you a lot. It will show you apparent wind, not true wind. Apparent wind is like looking at a steam train, as the train speeds up, the wind (smoke} will eventually move to always being backwards along the train.

Apparent wind is useful to yachts, because as they speed up, the sails need to be brought in.

If you want to know for mooring, look at the ripples on the water, or flags on the marina, or moored yachts, or simply just stop and see which way you float, this will tell you the combination of both tide and wind.

If you have a fly bridge, always helm from there in tight areas., you will feel much more in contact with the elements and have a far better view.

We have just tied some ribbon to the rail. The only time its any use is when we come to a complete standstill before we decide on our approach to the berth. Thankfully we dont have any currents to complicate matters...

As Gary said Force 4 do have them in their ensign area.
Also, what about a 'Windex' or 'Hawk'?

As 'hlb' said it's an apparent wind indicator but useful at berthing speed when helming inside.

I'd get a bit of 10mm (or whatever) bore s/s tube welded on. Most s/s fabrication shops can come to the boat with TIG welder, or the front pulpit section may just come off if you release some grub screws in the stanchion bases

I'm completely with Hadyn on this - I want to know true not apparent. In which case the best answer is a wind vane from your nav kit supplier, Raymarine or Garmin etc, plugged into the network, then a true wind display on the dashboard or you might be able to have the wind displayed on your MFD. As a bonus the whirler thing will be up the mast/radar arch and not obstruct your view at all
 
I really only want it for mooring from the lower helm, so apparent wind is fine (SOG will be a couple of kts max). I agree with HLB that fly bridge is best, and I'm there 99% of the time - I only need this for mooring in pants weather, when wind is also likely to be a factor. With that in mind, an electronic solution is really overkill, hence the burgee option.

I think jfm's DIY welding idea is probably the best option, maybe modifying one of the force 4 jobs (pulpit rail not easily removable - it's integral to the two side rails...)

Real cheapskates will find a CB shop and buy a mirror bar bar mount for around a fiver.Made of alloy with Stainless(ish) bolts.Will bolt round most pulpits.
Even cheaper skates will also buy a base loaded aerial with S/S whip to match and mount their Vice Commodore "Two Balls" burgee on it.:)

Two balls? Bray Vice Commodes only have one ball. the Rear Commodes have two...and its a "Broad Pennant" old boy, not a burgee!

A quick visit to Rochester CC website reveals that you are indeed a Rear Commode with two balls, and not a Vice Commode at all.... :)
