Mounting an outboard on the transom

I'm putting a 6HP outboard on the transom partly to augment the power on Muddy Paws but also because the o/b is steerable and can act as a sort of stern thruster (I am right in thinking that it will turn the boat and not just push it sideways?!!!). The main issue is to do with the transom outboard mount such as this one. I'm sure it's man enough for the job in ahead, but will it be OK with the lateral forces exerted when the outboard pushes sideways? I could put a fixed o/b bracket on but I want to be able to raise and lower the unit.

Yes it will steer the boat no probs.

I use the outboard to steer at low speed or in tight conditions.
Make sure you have the rudder under control or it may counter the trust of the outboad.

If you want to be really flash, you can make a linkage between the outboard and the tiller or rudder, so that when you turn the tiller/rudder, the outboard turns too. Makes marina manoevering much easier (especially astern).

Better if you bolt the outboard to the bracket rather than rely on the clamps.If one clamp works loose then you turn the motor to steer it can lift the outboard off the bracket.If the bracket is rated for 15hp it should be fine for 6hp.
