I want to mount my chartplotter below by the chart table but would like to swivel and tilt it so I can see it from the cockpit. Can anybody suggest an off-the-shelf bracket that would suit?
Have a look at Vesa mounts for LCD TVs; they could be easily modified for a plotter. I bought a Vesa swivel mount from IKEA the othe day for Euro20, this swivels in all axis and folds flat when "not in use". You can get lots of different sorts if you Google for "Vesa mounts". Alternatively you could use a portable PC mount, again there are a number of types on the market.
If you have a reasonably small plotter you could just buy a second mount for deck use and a second lead. The second led could poke out of the companionway when needed and otherwise be coiled away.
Try here, they make mounts for just about anything and if they have not got one they will design one to suit. I think they have a depot at Feltham just off the M3
Raychart 435.
The computer display mount looks ideal. I could swing the plotter round to be easily visible from the steering position.
I would have to route the cables carefully though.
That's a nice piece of kit. Powerful. You want to be able to reach the controls with comfort from the cockpit, not just see it otherwise you won't be able to alter the view etc. as conditions change which they tend to in pilotage situations. If you can't get a swivel mount so that you can comfortably reach and see everything, I would strongly recommend you to install a second bracket and run dual cabling. You will regret it if you don't .
Point taken. The beauty of the Vesa mounts which I have looked at on e-bay is that not only do they rotate but also extend so I could position the Plotter where the washboards are located. I am not very keen on unplugging and plugging in as this might be unreliable . Also drilling into my pristine gelcoat in the cockpit for a second mounting does not appeal!
Telephone arm used to lift and articulate a telephone on a desk ?
Or as a mate of mine did ... small piece of ply with hinge ... fit just inside hatchway - so swing it and peg to see in cockpit ... or unpeg and swing to see in cabin .....
If you can reach the controls easily then it is better not to have extra connectors, for sure. Otherwise you could consider getting a pro to do just the bit(s) you don't want to do. One hour labour?
Like this .. We have something similar. I don't specially like it, but haven't decided what to use instead. I don't like the way it blocks the companion, but I do like the way it minimises holes in the bulkheads.
Please note. This was a photo of an absolutely cracking Griffon Mk.ii for sale down south. If either the seller or the new owner wishes, I'll remove the photo.
Yes that's exactly what I had in mind! Did you see behind the instruments? I suppose a handful of wires have to be pulled out every time for the panel to be swung round.
Another great advantage of this system is that the instruments are normally out of sight down below so less temptation for thieves.
I did the same thing when I installed a Furuno Radar and GPS in my Centaur. It worked very well and the wires - even the heavy radar cables - tucked back quite well. Never right in, of course, it was a compromise. It allowed me to cat nap inside the cabin with an eye on the radar for twenty minutes or so, on longer passages. It works well when you are on auto (or tiller) pilot but not if you are steering manually though you can always engage the pilot to fiddle with the equipment.
