I have a metz antenna. i want it on top of the mast, but mounted with a deck mount. one i have ordered (Banten Stainless Steel Round VHF Antenna Deck Mount) is too large a diameter for the bottom of the metz. any ideas?
As far as I remember the bottom of the Metz Manta is an SO239 with a longish thread and a matching nut supplied. You can put this through a correctly-sized hole in any flat piece of metal and do up the nut, and that's it mounted. It might fit on the existing mount you have on the aft side of the mast, or failing that can you drill a hole in any of the other ironmongery you have there?
Hole cutters, one the size of the bracket, one to fit the stub of the Metz, piece of MDPE chopping board, Ikea is cheaper than Lakeland or raid the kitchen. Three self tapping or machine screws to secure the disc to the bracket. 1/2 hour of time.
You can't fit the Metz onto a 1" threaded mount without a threaded mount adapter. The PL259 connector on the end of the cable screws onto the threaded SO239 connector in the Metz antenna base so it has to stay there. The threaded connector in the base of the Metz goes through the hole in the L bracket supplied with it or any other mount with an 18 - 20mm hole in it. You can get flat mounts or stand-off mounts of this type if the L bracket isn't unsuitable.
Typically you wouldn't use a threaded mount at the masthead, they are more for use on the deck or rail or cabin top and are often adjustable so you can lay the antenna flat when going under bridges or putting on a boat cover.
It makes no difference to the antenna. You can mount on a plastic bracket or screw straight into an aluminium mast. The antenna is internally earthed and it doesn't require a ground plane.
