Mount Liferaft on pushpit - starlight 35 trim???

Compare the difference in trim when someone walks from the centre to the aft of the boat, and then divide that by 5 for the respective weight of the liferaft. It will be unmeasurable on a 35' boat.

I am going to disagree there allot depends on the design of the boat... Also if the boat already has a trim by the stern moving the Liferaft aft is not going to help.

Trim can make significant difference to sailing performance and seaworthiness of a boat, it is not something to be overlooked lightly...

Certainly on my present 35' boat I need to keep the weight aft, its significant if I walk to the bow SWMBO can notice the drop in speed!

A frequent modification when the engine dies is to drop a sail drive in and remove the 3m shaft to shift the weight aft.

Been away cruising, just spotted this thread!

I had my liferaft on the port pushpit aft on my starlight 35. I bought a new liferaft this year (old one becoming uneconomic to service) which was slightly bigger and heavier than the old one. So I have put it on the coach roof. However, experience over the past week is that it is not ideal there, I want this space for the deflated dinghy.

So I plan to mount the liferaft bracket on the stbd aft pushpit, but this will require moving the stern nav light, so will need a bit of thought. Stbd side to better balance the port/stbd weight balance on the starlight.

Really good feedback. Thanks.

I'm not saying that trim is not important, but I would hazard a guess that if you put an extra 20 kg on a the design at the stern and plugged the hull shape into a naval architect's buoyancy modelling software the difference in trim would be less than 1 mm on the waterline at the stern.
