Mount Gay

My mate Tony is the Engineer in charge of the Mount Gay Rum Refinery in St Lucy at the north end of the island - visiting this distillery is like going back in time to the 1800's as nothing much has changed really since then!

They have a 'pot still' which is one of the reasons why Mount Gay has such a unique taste - what also helps is their method of aging the rum, in barrels sold on from a whisky distiller in the USA (I think it is the Jack Daniels Distillery, but I am not 100% sure).
Although the aging and blending is carried out at the Mount Gay premises at Brandons (on the outskirts of Bridgetown) where they also have a Visitors Centre which offers informative tours of the warehouse where the barrels are stored, followed up by a tasting session...... the combined effect of breathing in the heady fumes of thousands of barrels of rum, coupled with lavish tasting measures poured afterwards ensures that everyone leaves the place fairly wrecked.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The location Mount Gay was originally called Mount Gilboa, but I guess a decision was made a long time ago that Mount Gay would be a better trade name than Mount Gilboa - I am not so sure that the marketing gurus would make the same decision today..... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Did you know that Mount Gay Rum is actually owned by Remy Martin? Please dont hold this against us though. However the actual distillery is still owned by the same family who set it up in the 1600's.

And finally, do you know how much your beloved Chancellor is taking off you every time you purchase a bottle of this fine amber nectar in your local offy?
I shall give you a clue, by mentioning that you can buy a half gallon plastic bottle in any local supermarket here, complete with various taxes, for approximately GBP 7.20 (at current rate of exchange).
As the folk in the USA might say, 'Go figure!' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have been a fan of Mount Gay rum for many years. In fact since I first visited there during my time in the Royal Navy, in about 1987.

My lady gets sponsored by them here in the UK for her rowing after her brother introduced her to it in 1992/93 having been working on the 'Vera', a 90 odd foot ketch, and took the ketch over there. He pestered our local two Pubs here at Heybridge Basin until they started to sell it. It is one of their leading spirits now!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have found Mount Gay a very enjoyable tipple, and will continue to introduce as many people to it as I can!!

(Send me more freebies!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif for the obvious plug)

The local distributor has promised to assist us in our Pirates of the Solent Charity weekend in June 2007!!!!!!

Fantastic smooth way to enjoy a taste of the Caribbean, where ever you may be afloat!!!!!!!!

thx to Martin ...hic... I have said plastc 1.75L Bottle hic... and Its a tough job...hic for a tough question but, I intend to get to the bottom of it ! ...hic /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Damn! I was hoping that Mount Gay here would be cheaper than the Woods Navy in Gib, but ours is about 10p a litre more....... no worries, the moral of the story here is to stock up in Gib, and then stock up again once you have crossed the pond!

Just be careful of 'Jack Iron' rum produced in Carriacou - it is an excellent emergency fuel for alcohol stoves - while Sunset rum produced in St Vincent has caused many hardened rum drinkers to re-assess their reputations (and their sore heads) the next day after a trawl of the Bequian watering holes......

Marini, if there is a very small ullage in the bottle, be very careful re 'getting to the bottom of it' - 4 pints of rum would faze even the die hard Jack Tars in the RN when they were issued their daily rations (I think it was about a half pint of neat rum every day?) /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Although once you have got to the bottom of said bottle, it does become a very useful water container to keep handy for the lifeboat grab bag.... or for the sundowner drinkie sessions..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mmmmm Rum flavoured water, (beats elderflower) another good reason to get to the bottom. he he /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mmmmmm, add a generous squeeze of fresh lime juice and the lime wedge (and perhaps some sugar syrup if you really insist), and you have an excellent rhum punch.....

To anyone who insists on adulterating their rum with vile substances like Coca Cola and such like, please use stuff like Barcardi or Captain Morgan - Mount Gay and Cockspur (not to be confused with Cockburns!) are too good for such sacriledge /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Our local always wipes the rim of the glass with a lime prior to serving Mount Gay, something I do at home now.

I do enjoy MG on it's own or with a cola, I don't mean to make you cringe, it's just how the mood takes me.

One ice with lime on it's tod is nice though, I must admit.

Al.

Just drained the final glass of the night, as well! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 39 steps to a Mount Gay

Yes, I am fairly sure that the 39 Steps are still going strong - I passed by there a couple of days ago, and saw the sign up. Lots of building work going on all around though.
I have only been there once, a couple of years ago, when we had a little office get together there, and it was very nice.
Yes, winter is very good for setting off withdrawal symptoms.... it looks like the No 1 Moose will just have to make another pilgrimage to low latitudes again soon!

Mount Gay deserve support cos they spnosr lots of yachtie events.

But Appletons is the afficionados rum of choice, whether straight, with coke or some other form of cocktail.

Enjoy. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Only heathens drink it with coke, sorry but true /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
A splash of gingerale or soda maybe but never coke.
With Limes rock.

Mount Gay baseball caps are sported by a lot of wannabe world girdlers. The tattier the better for some reason.

cannot agree, I have tasted most and Mount Gay's unique flavour still makes the best Cuba Libre with diet coke, and Pusser's the best on it's own on the rocks.

Personally I prefer Captain Morgan Spiced Rum /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
