Mount Gay hands out distinctive red baseball caps to all sailing participants at its sponsored regattas.

These caps are not for sale.

These "red hats" are coveted by many because if you see someone wearing one, it means they have sailed in a regatta.

These hats are prized amongst top sailors.

Some end up being sold on eBay

Yea I have a "virgin" one. No name no regatta simply mount gay. Worth a few bob and given to me by the distillery.

Prized? Really? I have a few sitting in a drawer somewhere, never worn. From about 15 or 20 years ago. I guess I'll have to dig them out and flog them on ebay.

Asked the Distillery for one in Feb when on a tour there , after sailing the Atlantic and 16 days at sea thought I deserved one but they wouldnt budge , bought a T shirt and 3 bottles of rum instead !! :p

I've had a couple of regatta endorsed caps and quite a few plain ones. Participants get the endorsed ones, support people and guests tend to get the plain ones.
They look a bit naff until they weather into a soft pink. Like jeans and deck shoes they have a relatively short 'cool' life between new and throw away condition.

Real sailors never appear in bright pink new caps. So several years ago when they were being dished out at Cowes weeks we used to take the new ones and hang them on the sunny side of our house and leave them until the next summer. By then they had weathered and acquired the correct patina. still have one or two.

Many years ago, on my first visit to the Caribbean, my eye was caught by a headline in the local paper - Sunsail Mount Gay Regatta. I found myself wondering if straight people would be allowed to compete as well, but of course I would not be that stupid now ....
