Mould inside lockers and bilges etc...

Hi all,

Obvious problem at this time of year moored in the UK, even with a de-humidifier! Anyone got any tips on cleaning the inside of the hull inside lockers etc after it gets mouldy stained? Bleach based cleaners do any damage to GRP?

i mist with laundry bleach in a spray bottle and wipe clean. no, bleach will not hurt GRP, may cut wax, but that is all. on my older whirew hull, a wash down and then mist and wash with clear water leaves a real white hull ready to wax or poly glow.

Daz in the bilges.

Any proprietary mould cleaner in Lockers if a simple detergent/Jif doesnt work.

Circulting air is a good preventaitve - leave lockers/bilges open

Bleach and detergents will all temporarily remove the mould and you'll think its a job done....but what you must do is to kill the fungus, usually black mould, so that it stops spreading. Without having access to some serious chemicals the best product i have found is called Dettox mould and mildew remover. This contains a small proportion of an aggressive fungicide and will put pay to re-formation of mould. Be carefull not to breath in the vapours of this product and ventilate well after using it.

The Dettox stuff is great. We've got a problem shower at home that doesn't get enough ventilation. The Dettox has kept it mold free, Much better than any other product I've tried.

Try a diluted mix of water and white vinegar. I heard about this last year, tried it, and it seems to work well. Smells like a chip shop for a couple of hours but then is ok!!! Bonus is that you are not having to breathe in some prety bad chemicals.

Sounds obvious, but be carefull when using the sprays. I did about half a quarter berth with Dettox & then started to feel the benefit of the spray on my throat. Felt & tasted strange for a few hours but I gave up and stopped.

Being a diver, I used a dive mask with a long hose to an air bottle next time.

It\'s bleach...

According to the Health & Safety Executive's information on surface biocides, the only active ingredient in Dettox Mould & Mildew Remover is Sodium Hypochlorite (aka bleach).
