Hi,
I'm sure this has been mentioned elsewhere, but to clarify:

For a Motorsailor, eg Fisher 34 or LM27 etc (so decent size engine but also sails).
Is a ICC(or RYA Day skipper) motor cruiser needed or a ICC / RYA DS sail required?...or both?

Thanks

Where are you planning to sail? No ICC, or indeed any formal qualification, is “needed” in UK coastal waters.

An ICC is needed in many European inland waterways. And possibly in a handful of countries, but not sure which if any for a Uk flagged boat.

So will depend on cruising grounds, and potentially boat flag.

A sail DS practical will include handling under power, so ticks both boxes. Not a requirement for UK waters, but a good way to learn the basics. If you're really starting from zero, a DS theory will give the theoretical background and make the practical a smoother ride. You could do it on line if there isn't a course near you. You'll also need a VHF licence, which, IIRC is a one day job.

It's not difficult to get an ICC covering both sail and power - I've had one almost since the ICC was invented. However, for the sort of motor sailers you give as examples, the engine power is well beoow the level requiring a power ICC and a sailing one will serve.

Peter.
