Hi, i would like to hire a decent motorsailer for about 4 days to try it.

Iam a professional ships pilot. and also a motor cruiser owner, so do have experience at handling the motor side.

My wife and myself fancied having a go at sailing, so completed a course on the Norfolk Broads last year, the instructors advice at the end, go and get some experience now.

So iam looking at hiring something like a motorsailer, (the best of both worlds ?), well trying to see if that is true anyway.

On somewhere like the Broads, or Lake District, or the Scottish Lochs, not at sea yet, as my wife needs to learn, and get some confidence first, in calmer waters, I also want get more experience with sails for a while.

Any ideas or suggestions please, preferably a company that does this?

Pete

Hi Pete
I had a motor boat for years then bought a motorsailor and now sail mainly on my own.
Never hoisted a sail in my life until then.
You do not need a 'motorsailor' to learn to sail and each type of Yacht or motorsailor have there own Oddities under sail.
Me I read all the books, talked to everyone who preached, went out with others to watch and physicaly 'hands on' learn.
In the end just DO IT ! .
Yes I have made many mistakes and have nearly turned my boat over twice by having to much sail up at the wrong time and conditions but its all experiance.
BUT,I would not learn on a lake if I was going to sail offshore, big differances in conditions.
My advice is determine 'where' you are going to mainly sail, then ask around if you can go out with a few locals and learn, many are happy to teach and its free.
OR try one of the many sailing holidays, some are for beginners.
Good luck.
By the way I am still learning but would not go back to just a motor boat, a motorsailor is the best of both worlds!
Regards
Mike

We have a motor sailer, it is good but not particularly good at sailing.Look at a Southerly , they seem to be a good compromise.
