Motoring Cone? Even worse are those going the wrong way

Our marina entrance channel is very shallow at LW springs and we draw 2.08m. Although there is a channel marked with port and starboard buoys, there is also a leading line with two markers to keep on line, so we will stick to it and buqqer the starboard edge of the channel especially with a 2kt x-tide. And no I'm not moving over for some noisy richard in a tiddler even if he has a big black cone over his balls!

Going through the entrance to Poole harbour can be great fun at times, with the chain ferry and tripper boats, as well as the cross channel ferry Barfleur and the Fast Cat Condor, and a decent spring ebb or flood tide.

Absolute mayhem on sunny summer weekends......

You forgot to mention either the Island ferries charging about, or that there are channels to either side, round Brownsea or along the coast to Bournemouth, that require people to cross the main channel. Plus madmen drift fishing in what can be quite a slop. And Scumseekers hurting in, and Royal Marines at full speed, and RNLI roaring in/out testing, each of these OWNS the channel

And yet, amazingly, rarely do I see people getting it wrong.

Would agree with this, although some people do shout a bit too early!! We got shouted at during the summer for being on the port side, would normally understand, but the fact that we were 3meters from the pontoon with 2 people ready to step off with lines...how else do we get on to the berth if we aren't allowed on the same side of the river as the pontoon?!

That does sound a bit extreme. But why didn't you go past the pontoon, turn round when practical, then come back to the pontoon on the starboard side. I would regard this as normal.

Well in that case, if the channel is narrow, you should have gone up river and turn around to get to the pontoon facing the right way. The same applies to car parking with the nose against the traffic flow. Although it is rarely enforced it is against the highway code and evidence that even for a few metres you drove the wrong way.

And if that then puts you trying to moor down wind and tide? Suddenly you become more of a hazard than if you were just mooring up like a normal person.

Not necessarily. In a marina or harbour there may be local regulations which override the normal rules.

Your "touchy" replies may reveal people who is not familiar with the COLREGS. The trouble is that once you will have crashed you will have done damage also to others rather than just yourselves.

Or is it just the international rules that are not coming from you Brits do not apply to you? The UK is a country of contraddictions. Everyone obeying to speed limits like sheep, is it because they are responsible? Not at all! It is the deterrent to get points, not the danger! But then you hardly get even stopped if you beam the foglights high against the cars coming towards you, or drive at night without any light at all, dangerous, but who cares? Do you?

Same goes for the COLREGS, no deterrent, everyone is a lion!

Are you truly naive enough to believe that this problem is limited to the UK. If its even a problem, life's tough, deal with it.

It has to do with the sarcastic nature of your comment.

In any case my passage was perfectly safe. In that instance I was coming from a very long distance and it took a full day sailing to get there. On those timescales it is hard to be spot on to the hour, I was actually earlier then scheduled and by my calculations it was safe to go through. I had the engine and the wind pushing me up the channel. Unfortunately the other sail boat in front of me did not think of using both power and sail and power boaters were going the wrong way.

I am here, I went through it, the passage was safe. But you commented sarcastically on my passage whilst the dangers were brought by irresponsible boaters going the wrong way up the channel. Is sarcasm the only contribution you could make to the discussion?

Sorry did some one say common sense??????????? We did turn around so we had the tide up the chuff carrying us onto the boat infront of us we think it keeps the insurance busy ....come on give us a chance! (sorry for sarcasm!!!)

Then there are the jetskis wake jumping on the wash from big mobos sticking exactly to the 10kt limit, the sailboarders and now the kite sailboarders, not to mention our clubs fleet of (engineless) X-boats racing in/out. Mind you one of the X-boats did take a short cut by passing underneath the chain ferry. The odd fishing boat or two will be tied up to the channel markers too. Classic was the marine police on PWCs riding shotgun on the Condor fast cat ferry to prevent the local PWC heros from running between it's hulls.
