Motorboating near Lymington, Hampshire

yup,

Boats tend to stay a lot cleaner in dry stack (was the case when we moved the rib from pontoon berth to dry stack)

As well as antifoul and anodes, for those with volvo outdrives, the saving on stearing rams will be SIGNIFICANT!

i am firmly of the school that boats shouldnt live in the water and only enter the water when they are being used! for me tho, the best advantage wasnt financial but was that i didnt have to worry about the boat (as much) when it was in the rack. at the time i was travelling a lot and would be away from the boat for several months at a time. There were so many times i was sat thousands of miles away with no way of checking the boat.

The other thing to consider is how they dry berth your boat. If it's 40' up in the air on a rack it's not so great. Mine is on a big trailer in the yard so I have 24/7 access to it for maintenance, or just pottering about. It has access to shore power and water hoses are just a few metres away so you wash the boat down after use. The hull stays like new.

I thought about keeping it on a pontoon, but really, for a smaller boat it's a no brainer to dry berth.

yup, depending on where you are, most dry stack facilities have service racks, i know they have been only too happy to lift our boats down from the stack and place on a service rack for whatever time we needed to do any jobs. The big plus side of it being higher up, the chances of theiving low life coming along to have a go a greatly reduced.

No problem, Saxon are more than happy to lift down as often as required either for launching or for maintenance. Even lifted down so I could quickly grab my camera which I had left on board. I'm on the top rack. I've never had to wwait for more that a few minutes and that was when I gave them too little notice.

Highly recommend racking. Also recommend high racking (out of reach of scrotes)

Wouldn't say it never happens, but luckily we have very few of "that type" around here.
Certainly the boats on the water get targeted more than boats on dry berthing.

In addition we have locking gates and a security guard in season.
Beyond that, no notice is needed. Turn up and your boat will be launched within a minute or two.
Going very early? Ask and the boat will be launched the night before.
Coming back late? No problem the boat will be lifted first thing.
Want to bob about? No problem the boat can go on the end of the pontoon.
Want to work on your boat or generally get onboard? You can it's at ground level.
Need fuel? Just ask and we'll fuel her mid week without her ever leaving her marina yard trailer.

But, both racks and trailers work.
We have a small number of racks for +/-6m sport boats and ribs. Again, the boat can be put on a work rack if needed.

Not in Lymington, but close by at the Hamble. These guys - Pure Latitude - are very good. i am a member, and they have a good mix of boats, both power and sail, for members to use. Powerboats are: 6.5m Ballistic RIB, Cap Camarat 755, Bavaria 35 Sport, Beneteau Antares 30 Fly and soon there will be an Aquador 32C.

Membership costs between £6000 and £8400 per year, depending on how much/when you want to use the boats. Bearing in mind youd pay that to keep a 35ft boat on the Hamble in a marina I think its good value, but I wouldnt call it cheap.

No connection, other than a satisfied member
