Hi,

Having recently purchased (well in the process) a small (circa 30ft) semi-displacement boat and creating a list of the jobs for the winter lift out. One of the main area of focus will be on the antifouling, sorry to open that can of worms again! The boat was lifted out and cleaned about six months ago; however, due to little usage since then (prior to my purchase) has accumulated a load of growth on the hull etc, which I will get jetted off. Does anyone have any experience of using either Copper Coat or Silicon based antifouling (such as Silic One) on semi-displacement motorboats; I am wondering if one of those would be a better solution to the ablative antifouling that is on her at the moment to help minimise the growth? Some details, the boat is located on the Solent, would probably be used once an mouth between Feb and Nov, with a typical cruising speed around 12 knots and usage will be probably mainly around the solent area's (no further than Portland or Brighton) while I find my sea legs again and get back into boating; I eventually plan to go further :)

Any advice welcomed,

Thanks,

Thomas

I’ve just put Coppercoat on my boat - the third boat I’ve put it on. There’s a fairly recent thread about it if you scroll down. Can’t do it in the winter though. I can never understand the logic of a winter lift out. Mines been out for a month as I had a long list but it’s going back in as soon as I can.

I just use a normal AF but mix copper and Zinc oxide in with it. You can buy it on eBay cheaply. I never have any barnacles or coral worm. Just a little furry moustache around the water line. This soon comes off after a journey. I'm in the Solent, my boat is a Semi-D and gets used weekly April-November.

I have Silic One but on a planing hull.

Works well for me, I'm in my 3rd year and it has saved me ££ on annual full lift it's Vs a lift and hold.

Fouling does occur but a high speed run (20 knots plus) is needed to clear it.

Not worth it on a semi displacement hull with occasional use...

Might be worth enquiring locally what everyone else uses .They will have gravitated to what’s works best .
local yard s etc .
It’s important the performance when it’s stud Idle @ the berth in the marina .Each marina environment is slightly different and if there’s a chink in the AFs armour some critters might find it and start to bind on.

The critter spread in each environment is slightly variable . That’s the point .
You only need one the AF is not so good with .

if you do lift out once a year Hemple Classic is good budget A/F for any Semi D. boat, available on ebay for around £60.00 for 5 litres.
