We were out spectating at the RS Tera [a kids dinghy] National championships at Burnham this weekend.
In the past I have been known to complain about wash and passing too close from motorboats.
However I have to say I was very impressed by the consideration given to the racing dinghies and good handling of the boats passing by or through the race course.
At times, with nearly 100 boats racing, there wasn't much room left for passage but everyone showed good manners and patience.
It was much appreciated. I had no connection with the organisation, just an observer.

Me too, I was there and I agree with all of that. However, todays course was set just below the entrance to the marina, which I thought a bit foolish. Why didn't they move it 100 yards further upstream so that boats coming out of the marina had a clear passage downstream, which is where almost everybody went?

Hi,

Great to hear of the courtesy extended to the would be Ben Ainslies. I didn't see the regattta, but......

A sensible recommendation for those organising dinghy racing for children is to keep the whole course reasonably close to the launch / recovery point. For a race organised by BSC it is also sensible to use the club start line, which is about half a mile below the Yacht Harbour entrance, with their pontoon used for launch and recovery just a few metres upriver.

In view of this, courses downriver of the Yacht Harbour entrance are almost inevitable.

The first day the racing below the Royal Corinthian YC and way past the last moorings.

I don't agree it was sensible to be just below the entrance to the marina, with yachts coming and going through the course - just a few metres further up above the entrance would have been more sensible

Nearly 100 boats racing, someone will be inconvenienced. This was a large sailing event by any reckoning and one of the largest that Burnham Sailing Club has hosted.
It went extremely smoothly and everyone enjoyed a great weekend.
Boats using both Burnham Yacht Harbour and Essex Marina showed consideration, which was nice to see and was appreciated.
Let's not pick holes in the organisation, I expect we could all have done it much better:rolleyes:

I was there and I agree with all of that, except all I was saying was it was a bit thoughtless to set a course just below the marina entrance, when it could have so easily be set above the entrance.

BTW I was told there was a 106 entries, and as usual BSC were good hosts, I always enjoyed going there when my granddaughter was racing an Optimist
