Most stuck-up yacht club?

Firstly all Yacht Clubs should be welcoming and there should be no "rank" amongst sailers and hence no cause for snobbery but a word in the defence of yacht clubs. Until I started showering aboard I always used the showers at Alderney Yacht Club. I always had a drink in the bar afterwards and found the members friendly but often wondered how they felt about paying for the upkeep of showers that seemed to be used by visitors more than them. Frankly these facilites should be provided by the harbour authority and not rely on the local Yacht club.

"Are you a member of another club?" I am a member of another club and visitors from Alderney YC (and other YC's) would be welcome to use my clubs facilities. I think it reasonable for those that pay for the upkeep of showers etc by way of membership fees to be able to enjoy a reciprical welcome at other clubs. But shoud members be expected to provide this service for everyone who buys a boat? Is it reasonable to hope for quid pro quo? Are those that expect others to pay for their shower facilities without contributing anything - freeloaders?

I will now duck.

Ours isn\'t but don\'t duck

I wouldn't duck if I were you it is a very reasonable statement of the dilemma that YCs find them in. My club, Keyhaven, gives access to any visiting yottie, YC member or not, who arrives by sea and is thinking about offering reciprocal arangements to local clubs for those that arrive by land. The rules of clubs make offering a general service illegal anyway and we get plods in occassionally to make sure that we turn away those that don't fall into the two specific categories.

We are in the (mis?)fortunate position that the club house is at the back end of a nearly drying creek that itself is behind a rivermouth that is not all tides accessible, so the numbers for us will always be relatively small. I can see tho' that for clubs with easier access in popular places like those at Weymuff and Salcombe will have more of a problem.

Re: Most stuck-up yacht club? I have one candidate ...

Having had occasion to Survey a few boats in there, also made friends with one or two in the club ... I was annoyed to be treated so badly and snobbishly ... I could not undestand what gave them idea that they could be sations above me or others ??

OK they have distinction of a certain famous Circumnavigation ....... having started basically outside the club ...

What Club? Eastney Cruising Association.

Not only did they have an attitude to outsiders - but not so long ago they had a Political Fight inside their own ranks !!

I shall not grace their boards again ....

I am also a member of the RCYC, though I regret I am unable to comment on its recent level of service since I haven't been through the door in many years.

I hope shortly to have more time on my hands and to reacquaint myself with its charms.

Funnily enough, (or not), I put my late fathers name into Google and the only reference there was to his years as Captain of Sunbeams and none at all to his much greater achievements in the world of golf. Nice to see all the same.

It will be good to see you back again.

By an amazing co-incidence, referring to Nigel Luther's posting immediately above yours, I was an active member member of the ECA in the 1960s when I kept my Caprice, and subsequently my self-built Trident in Langstone Harbour.

It was a great little club based in an ex army hut with a wonderful atmosphere. I'm sorry to see that it appears, according to Nigel, to have gone downhill in its newer and better equipped premises.
