Can anyone settle an arguement?

What's been the most popular yacht in the UK?
Several have been suggested, but we reckon that the Centaur, Sadler 25, and the little Fox Cub(?) will be on the list.

and how long is a piece of string? Wow, as there isn't any licensing scheme (oh no, not again) you could only tell from sales figures, which may not be entirely accurate. If they are available. Or is it just a vote on which people think is the most popular?
Another thing to ponder is, which yacht did people buy and then sell, not having enjoyed it?

Depends if you mean popular as most common. We have about 250 yachts on our club moorings and the Centaur is by some way the one we have most of. That applies to Westerlies in general. I guess you might get a different answer from the unfortunates who pay the rapacious rates in the various Solent marinas. If you pay 4 or 5 grand for a mooring then a Centaur may not be for you.

It will have to be the most common, anything else would be even harder to guesstimate.

Personally I would never have a Centaur, whatever the cost of the mooring!. Very good boats, but not for me

But which model?

I suspect that, these days, they change the model so often that the numbers will still be lower than some of the older marques.

Folkboat would get my vote, if you add all its 'derivatives': Folksong, Holman 26, Stella, CO26, Halcyon, Invicta, Twister, Rustler etc etc.

If not, what about Vivacity - even excluding the tens of thousands built in the USA?

The most popular British boat ever built was the Westerly Centaur with over 2,400 built. However, it is not the biggest seller in Europe which was, I believe, the Maxi 95, or maybe, the Albin Vega, which itself was not the biggest seller in the world, which was the Catalina/Alacrity/Jaguar 22 which is still in production as the Catalina 23 with sales approaching 30,000

PS: As someone has already pointed out, these days model changes are so frequent few modern designs sell more than a few hundred and many - still regarded as successful - sell under 100.
