Mosquitos and other evil nasty biting insects

One very satisfying trick !

Mossies are slow flyers and they don't have the same sight ability as house flies ... who can see you whichever angle you attack from ...

So you have a few mossies on the ceiling resting waiting for lights out and you trying to sleep ................. bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz bite - you b......d !!

So instead of letting THEM have their way with you .... YOU do it to them ?

How ??

Bog standard vacuum cleaner with long hose ..... they can't fly out of the suction ... you can vacuum them up with the greatest of satisfaction - knowing that the b.......ds are suffering dire things as they get dragged up the pipe into the dust and cr..p inside your machine !

Another vote for the Avon lady. We bought a load of it a couple of years ago and got a free mobile into the bargain only it was with Orange and the signal near Shieldaig was non existant. Still, it works most places and we don't get bitten by midges. The Midge machines are brilliant, going to try the resulting mass of bodies as ground bait.

Mossies are slow flyers quote]

Whilst going through the Riviere Salee in Guadeloupe the mossies got so thick one could hardly see. Speed up to 4kts and they couldn't keep up.

Later on the ICW I was eaten by the green headed biting flies. SWMBO by the mossies. The orange OFF! stuff excellent. Also useful is stuff called "After Bite" www.tendercorp.com From US hunting supplies. It works.

US skin so soft has insect repellant in it, British stuff doesnt, as far as I can see. Do I wait till Im in the States and buy it there?

BTW - thanks for all the replies - I'm going home now, so bye bye, thanks and OUT.

Don't worry Suzy. When you are off somewhere insecty, just pm me, and I will lend you HWMBO. Not only is he quite terrified of biting insects, he also appears to be irrestiable to them. So with him nearby, you could go naked and covered in strawberry jam, and the insects would completely ignore you!

it's true, honestly. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best advice is check out what the locals use.
First time I sailed in Canada I used the mozzie spray I had left over from sailing in the Med......... big mistake!
The rest of the crew thought I was a godsend as I was eaten to death the first couple of nights and they were completely left alone. Eventually they took pity on me and allowed me to borrow their local stuff which had Deet in it which mine didn't. Not another bite after that.
Some people do react to Deet though.
Even the locals didn't have any answer to the noseeums, little bu$$ers!

In St. Martin we purchased what looked like a squash racket. 2 AA batteries in it, and the strings are little wires. When you press a button in the handle a high voltage (I guess) is generated in the wires. Catch a mozzie with this and a satisfying bzzzttt and a little blue spark. One less mozzie. Certainly the best thing for hunting down or clearing out a room of the buggers.

I highly reccomend them.

CRAG HOPPERS do mozzie resistant clothing. I have some long sleeve T shirts and a pair of cargo pants from them and swear by them. Never been bitten through them yet. Seems to be made of some lightwieght densely woven material.

Smart stuff too and cheap if you can find one of their discount shops.

Still needs something around neck, ankles etc but if your like me and the b******s get through normal clothing, I can't recommend this stuff enough.

As an aside biggest I've ever seen are in Canada near the Rockies. About the same speed and size as Stukas. And do as much damage.

Anything containing DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) the more the better, just follow the instructions.
It's the only effective active ingredient I've ever found. Other than that insecticide impregnated mosi nets are very good for sleeping under.

Wilmas Nordic summer.

The second best thing there is agains mosquitos. Works against midges too, I tested it in Scotland this summer.

Disadvantage with Wilmas is that it also repels most humans. I have yet to find out if can be applied to a boat for undisturbed moorings...

The best thing against mosquitos is to bombard their breeding grounds with a petroleum like (I'm no expert) substance a few weeks per year. It might damage the eco system though and should be used sparingly.

SWMBO is a magnet for mossies. We burn anti-mossie oil in a couple of little lamps. Seems very effective, though we don't visit places of high mossie density, even one is a disturbance.

40 Miles offshore, after 10 day passage, got bitten by mossy, b*****d! Senegal, so malaria worry, although began anti-malaria prophylactics five days previous.
But 40 miles,... ten days,... how?

Senegal and Gambia, used coils but irritating on windless nights and still got bitten. Then discovered black coils. Black coils non irritating, still saw flyers out corner of eye but they stopped biting with black coils.
Made net curtain which tied down onto jackstays, over spray hood and flipped down like a bride's veil to cover whole companionway entrance.
Used cream repellant, containing DEET for evenings outside when mossies were thick. Just slap, slap, slap, they're gonna get you anyhow.

We get big biuggers out here - at the height of our season a couple of months ago we joked that we could keep the mossies out of the cabin with chicken wire. And we this was worrying close to the truth!
