Could someone advise me on how to gain access to my single lever control. It seems to have become much stiffer to operate as it engages gear. I have lubricated the cable at the gear box end, but would like to do the same at the control end. The lever appears to be held on by an Alan screw.

Sorry I can see no makers name but it is one of those levers which has to be pulled outwards if you do not want to engage gear but increase the revs' in nuetral.

You will find that most of the working parts, including the cable ends, are only accessible from inside the boat (behind the lever).

Although they can be fitted from the front of a bulkhead.

Suggest taking off the lever (small grub screw), and then the cover. The fixings should now be exposed, and after unscrewing them you may be able to withdraw the controls (it may take a bit of fiddling - at some point you usually have to rotate through 90deg)

The button in the centre of the lever, which allows you to put the engine in neutral, can cause this. Try pulling it off as it is just a push fit then try your throttle lever. I had mine stripped in the cockpit when a passing engineer told me this. I was a bit miffed to say the least.

My mistake. When I carry out minor adjustments on mine, I crawl down to the end of the quarter berth but the unit (Morse) can be removed into the cockpit if necessary once the four through bolts/screws have been undone.

I've got a cold and my little brain is a bit addled! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If you've got a MN-SSB- the black handled side-mount unit- or any of the others from that series, you'll not be able to properly solve your problem unless you dissassemble the unit completely, clean and re-lubricate it. But I personally wouldn't bother removing the roto-swaged fastenings holding it all together, because to grind the swages off and reassemble it with s/steel bolts and ny-locs is a huge PITA. The controls are tricky little B's to get out if you don't disconnect the cables, and they ususally are easiest to remove in one direction only. Figure out how it went in, first. My $'s on it being fitted from the rear or cabin-side, with the bezel fitted last, before the handle was fitted. To get it off, you'll have to get the lever off, and then gently remove the bezel. Underneath you'll find 4 screws which fasten the unit down. Once you've got them out and disconnected the cables, the control will remove easily. I'd chuck the whole beast in a bucket of petrol- not paraffin- to remove the old schmirtch and crunge, and re-grease the whole unit with new waterproof grease. Failing the complete disassembly, you can attack the unit with a can of WD40, which has incredible gremlin-repellant properties!
Good luck!
