Morse Control Adjustment

Hi,
I have an old Seamaster 30 with twin Perkins 4108s.
The Morse controls seem loose, and when out of gear they will not hold at settings above tick-over. When in gear there is no problem.
I have had a quick look at the control but can see no obvious way to tighten them up. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

Regards,

Brian.

If the throttle is not slipping in gear then the strength of the return spring at the injection pump needs to weakened if possible.

The other option is to dissemble the Morse head and increase the friction on the centre shaft.

This can be done by making many centre point punch marks on the shaft, which will increase its diameter a little.

be careful not too many otherwise it wont fit!

this method has the advantage of firming up the levers nicely, and on the later heads with the plastic sleve doesent seem to wear back quickly.

Thanks for the prompt reply!!
I will have a go next time I'm over at the boat.
I believe the springs are original (they don't seem very strong either) so I will look at your centre punch solution.

Re: Morse Control Adjustment ... another one ...

My Single lever morse is set that at least 1/3rd movement of handle before it kicks into gear ....

How to adjust it so that the gear is engaged nearer centre position ??

Re: Morse Control Adjustment ... another one ...

There is no adjustment for that, however ....

if the length of the gear lever on box was shortened, it would come into gear earlier,

but then something has to be done with the excess movement of the cable, perhaps mounting the cable outer on a spring that could take up the excess? make it a bit spongey going into neutral though.

but even after all that the throttle still wouldnt open till the 1/3 movement is past so is it worth messing about?

It might be worth changing the cables as wear will take its toll. have found the top range morse cable very worthwhile on long runs and tight bends, easier freer and more positive.

Re: Morse Control Adjustment ... another one ...

Funny thing is that previous engine gear clicked in at about 5 to 12 position .... now its between 10 and 15 to 12 position. It all feels like slack in system ... .......

Will have to crawl about and study it working next time on boat ... see what can be done ...

Cheers

Re: Morse Control Adjustment ... another one ...

I had problems with the single lever (Morse?) controls on Pendragon. The throttle was opening too early, which could not be adjusted as the throttle was also reaching it's stop before the cable had stopped moving. Caused a serious handling problem.

I came to the conclusion that the contols were designed to fit an earlier engine, before the Perkins 4108 was installed.

I got over the problem by making and fitting a 'lost motion device' on the engine throttle lever. This comprised an additional lever bushed onto the throttle lever, excess movement being absorbed by a spring. I also fitted a conventional throttle spring to avoid problems if the new spring was to break.

The boat now remains in gear down to idle speed.
