Presumably he was trying to make some sort of point as he swam straight at the blades of the Oxford boat. Looks premeditated too, as he was wearing a wet-suit. I may be wrong, but I understood PLA does not permit swimming
on their waters?

Staggering... Why was he not spotted earlier???

Did rather enjoy the umpire boat then having a pop at the RNLI for his wash during the restart... :)

Seems no one is exempt!

What a prat

The swimmer definately ruined the race for all involved. Had there not been a restart then Oxford would not have been as aggressive which caused the clash and broken. There will be some devistated young people tonight. I hope he is charged with something. Anyone know if the Oxford bowman recovered okay?

As for the lifeboat... Well the rowers on that stretch have always said that it is a big wash boat! Perhaps we should volunteer our services next year?!!!

I feel so sorry for the Oxford crew.
In my opinion Oxford would probably have won, had it not been for the swimmer.
Admittedly their cox was in the wrong, but if a cox isn't being shouted at then they aren't taking a good line.
Well played to the Oxford crew to continue, I doubt I would have had the strength of mind to continue the race.
Alex Woods is set to make a full recovery thankfully.

I also feel sorry for the Cambridge crew.
The Cambridge crew will probably never feel like they really won that race. Immediately post-race they were all exultant, but I think now the crew feel slightly less pleased about their win.

Funnily enough, it's the Cambridge crew I feel most sorry for, because -- as you say -- they will never feel that they really won that race.

But they did win it. The rules are quite clear that you have to accept the consequences of your own accidents. Oxford's cox must have known that breaking a blade is always a risk if you get close to another boat, but it was a risk that she chose to take -- as she had been doing, all through the race.

She lost Oxford the race just as surely as if she had steered the boat into a bridge.

Agreed that Cambridge won according to the rules but the race was turning into a classic up to the swimmer. It is the selfishness of the swimmer's actions that irks me - these guys are all amateurs who give up a huge amount for one race, by stopping the race he ruined the event regardless of what happened next, as it became a five minute sprint instead. Both crews will be gutted.

Let's hope there is better security at Dorney ;)

Security etc

Dorney hopefully it wil be snipers with high powered rifles!! Tongue firmly in cheek.

If an idiot is prepared to put themselves in a position of such danger, then they must be prepared to face the consequences - if they didn't get knocked out by a thrashing blade then the propellors of the following fleet should have done for them.

And why when Oxford had a lead at the time of the incident did the (Cambridge) umpire do his utmost to start them again level? If the small lead had been recreated, then possibly the clash would have been avoided as Oxford would have been ahead?

Certainly a false victory for Cambridge, Oxford might have been better just to have stopped so the race was 'not rowed out' and the bowman would not have rowed himself into the ground - glad he seems to be OK.

Wimp-out by the organisers
Pinsent added: "It's not ideal but given those circumstances what could we do? It's a safety issue. Fortunately we spotted him and stopped the race. We couldn't possibly have carried on."
of course they could. One nutter less, we're already overpopulated.
Besides, Trenton Oldfield, what sort of name is that?

It is said to have been a protest against elitism. Does Trenton Oldfield know what it means? It will be interesting to hear his thoughts on the subject, and why he thought the Boat Race was an apt target.

Missed opportunity

Missed opportunity

It's a shame that the Oxford man broke his blade on the Cambridge boat and not the swimmers head

May have knocked some sense into him!

Of course he knows about elitism... Privately educated and with a Masters degree from the LSE.....

I expect he also realised that if he was hit by one of those oars at race speed it would cave his head in, and that the propellors of the following boats would make mincemeat of him.

In his Internet rant he refers to Emily Davison (the suffragette) running onto the Derby course and subsequently dying of her injuries.

it turns out he is Australian. Perhaps in line with Oz rules on behaving in your host country, he could be put on the next flight home ?

Site definately needs some pictures maybe girls in swimsuits ? and a good edit from somebody at the Sun or Mail perhaps :)

It is slightly worrying, with the Olympics coming up and every moron in town thinking it clever to get his name in the paper by means of an act of anarchy.
The answer is simple. The Boat Race moron is Australian. Send him back to Oz - immediately. Add him to the persona non grata list. And ignore any inputs from the "European Court of Human Rights".
Perhaps thereby other such morons will at least think twice....
