Morgans of Strood are closing today

WoW Morgans were the scource of much timber to me in the 60s n 70s ; pity its closing down , has the requirement for timber for boating diminished then ? perhaps the Building Trades buy elsewhere now ?
I was amazes at the Cut Tree lengths lying around the yard , drying out I guess ;

Maybe the yard has a modern New Homes development potential ? some with riverside views ,

The Strood Yacht Boat Club is also on its doorstep !

Wait five minutes and there will be a planning application for a housing estate. Indeed the guarantee of developing brownfield land for housing will have played a huge part in the decision to cease trading. It is the predictable and inevitable consequence of a process that restricts the supply of land for housing in order to protect the countryside.

The planning in principle is already there! It is part of a long-term housing plan, already published, by Medway Council from the old Wingets site by Rochester Bridge to join with the new housing upstream and opposite Medway Bridge Marina. Possibly affects SYC as well as the Pelican C.C. long term, but not anticipated to happen for a long time yet I am told. Businesses in Knights Road have already been given notice to move as long as 2 years ago.

Boat skipper at one of the clubs mentioned is anticipating a pay out when his boat club premises is purchased, voluntarily, or other wise,
Stories that a deisel generator from one of the subs hulked down at Bee Ness found its way into Morgans Yard to generate electrical power during the war years. ?

Yep was a member of SYS for many years back in the 60s and 70s , i recall that we had to do a sharp left hand to go under a low railway bridge then straight over into SYS or sharp right to go toward Morgans Yard

Whats the intentions about gaining access to Morgans without going under that rail bridge ? anybody know ? my guess /recollection is that that Bridge would be a problem for any main large scale housing develoments
