I have just purchased a Morgan Giles Motorboat built in the 1960's. She has been painted within an inch of her life, I would like to vanish from the boot stripe up to the deck. The question is she has been double planked, with the outside planking looking like carvel, including the caulking gaps. The trouble is there are hundreds of nail heads showing when the paint is stripped, how do you make it look good with all these nail heads.

Depends on how much time you have to "waste" on the project. If the nail heads are flush or just below the surface, the chances of hiding them are poor. If they are countersunk you might be able to plug them. If they follow a regular pattern the plugs might look OK but almost certainly you will end up with darker patches around the plugs if water has got in and the final finish will look patchy.

If you do want a varnish looking finish, suggests you use Sikkens Novotech/Top with a light stain as this disguises local blemishes which can actually be accentuated by conventional clear varnishes (as well as lasting a lot longer).

On balance, probably better to use a conventional pigmented paint finish in your colour choice - better protection and easier to keep looking good.

Is your Morgan Giles the one that was advertised on the BMPT website recentlty, I think she was in the Tyneside area?

Monaco Cruisers

Morgan Giles made a range of very good looking motor boats in the 60's called Monaco cruisers. I believe the smallest ones were around 35 feet and they went up to 40/50 feet. The smaller ones had a pair of Lister Blackstone 2 stroke diesels.
If your boat is one of these, then I am surprised if she is carvel planked. I thought they were marine ply, in which case your thoughts on varnishing may be optimistic.
Can you check a "through hull" fitting and see what the end grain looks like?

To answer the questions,

wsteer , yes

miket, defineatly double planked, diagonal inside but as stated carvel style outside with small gaps and hardwood.36' with twin Fodens 80bhp each with rootes blowers

franktompson, never thought of good old Brummers, worth a try

OT but is that the 3 or 4 cylinder FD? Top noise they make, and plenty of it too! The Listers mentioned above were the marine/industrial version of the Commer TS3 I think, also a lovely noise. I love blown 2strokes.
