More single handed problems

To minimise power consumption I have had good results with the following wheeze. Get her sailing as straight as possible and trim the sails with care, engage the auto pilot and let it take over steering. When it is fully settled on course turn it off (leaving the arm still attached). Sailed over 15 miles, on a reach, like this last year; did not touch the helm once.

But most small boats have their balance upset when 10+ stone of skipper goes forward or aft whether under sail or not
Under engine with sails dropped a tiller pilot will keep you predictably on course while you deal with fenders, warps, sail cover, boat hook, tea, visit heads, pump bilges....

Tiller pilots are not just for long hauls. I would miss mine.
