More reflections on our prop issue.

"I am now tending to this way of thought myself. Lifting out again here could be a nightmare, I have only measured the taper on the old shaft, not the new one. This is Portugal, anything that can go wrong will, and the idea that a new prop will not get lost in customs and that it will fit and be fitted in minutes in the slings is hopelessly optimistic."

I have to say that this was my initial thought. Tinkering is bad enough when in your own backyard, with no language issues and all stock at your fingertips. You have a working engine and can fine tune things at your leisure at some future date.

I have a 20hp Beta and the same gearbox, I think once I ran it up towards 3000 rpm but it was painful to my earholes so that was it. 2100 revs is my usual cruising speed and I have done this for 15 years. No worries so far. So if the engine is not kicking out smoke I agree you should go for it.

Just to close,

I bought a new prop from T Norris, who recommended 13x9 for the Beta16 rather than the 13 8 recommended by Beta.

I now get 5 kts at 2000rpm, and can easily get 3000rpm without any stressful noises.

The old prop must have been the problem, and it is not explainable by a 0.5" pitch difference.

What rpm do you get flat out in ahead now? It should be 3600rpm but provided you get 3400rpm I'd be happy with that. Anything less and you are overpropped and won't have maximum power available should you need it.
