Thank you all for your advice. But there are a few more questions I would like to ask. Firstly, what about healthcare if you are in no fixed country? do I need BUPA?
Secondly, What are reasonable cost per year in marinas around Spain and Italy during the winter. What are the general running costs for a year for one person on a thirty footer?
Thirdly, all the little things, how do you do your laundry? What about pets? How hard is it to fit central heating?
I have read all the other postings and it all looks very feasable, but I need to know much more. Once again your comments would be much appreciated.
Yours Windspeed.

<<Firstly, what about healthcare if you are in no fixed country? do I need BUPA?>>

providing you are an EC citizen you can use their local NHS. As nearly all of our continental neighbours have a 2ary healthcare service in better trim than ours you'll be better off. Get the necessary form from your local Post Office.

<<Secondly, What are reasonable cost per year in marinas around Spain and Italy during the winter.>>

Med prices are high and overcrowding considerabl;e. You'll be lucky to get a winter mooring unless you're there and occupying it (Catch 22). Spain is cheaper than Italy, expect about €1100 for the half-year, in Spain and about 150% in Italy. Your best bet is to stick to Atlantic Spain.

<<What are the general running costs for a year for one person on a thirty footer?>> th
After paying for your mooring and if you eat in and have no excessive luxuries one can quite easily manage on a budget of €200/month in Spain, about 20% more in Italy and about 40% more in France.

<<all the little things, how do you do your laundry?>>

In France all the ports have laundrettes at about €6/6kg, in Spain many have washing machines in the marina complex at slightly lower rates than France.
Italy is a problem, few if any laundrettes and laundry costs a bomb through local ladies. In Viareggio I found a laundrette with did 10kg including detergent, for €4 - the only one I've found in Italia.

<<What about pets? >>

You take your pick - cats are the least problem.

<<How hard is it to fit central heating? >>
Don't bother, use an electric fan heater whilst you're in a marina. It's not like the UK, I've drunk beer in shorts sitting outside the bar in Gelves in February.

Partially disinformative

Schengen countries allow free movement of pets as well as persons.

As the poster referred to 2 Schengen countries - Italy and Spain the stricture would not apply.

The UK is the major problem requiring pet passports, special carriers and limited ports of entry.

So if you were not intending to bring your pet back to the UK, but circulate in the W Med there would be no apparent problems.
