Pure guessing but I presume they were aware of the forecast - they'd be idiots if not - and they were stress testing within reach of rescue. Wonder if they are still keen?
Possibly, but as you know waves very different and often more dangerous in shallower & tidal waters close to shore compared to deep Atlantic.

One would have expected those craft to be self righting & the crew have means of getting back aboard by their ownefforts
It seems that the crew were still in the water when the lifeboat arrived. Must have been there for some time .

One such was self righting, capsized mid Atlantic, all the loose equipment fell onto the deckhead and she stayed inverted, salutary lesson. They were rescued.

When I rolled my Volvo many years ago I was amazed how
much crap ended up on the roof (or floor depending how you look at it!)

Not necessarily. It sounds as though one of the crew suffered a head injury during a capsize which was the reason for the distress call. Nothing to suggest that the boat didn't right or that the crew ended up in the water. It sounds as if the casualty was airlifted from the rowing boat and the remaining crew waited onboard for the lifeboat. There is no way that the rescue helicopter would have left the crew in the water! In rough seas (and assuming that they had survival gear), I believe that it can be safer for the lifeboat to recover the crew from the water rather than to try to manoeuvre alongside and recover directly. I would assume that that this is the reason for the phrasing used.
