Sorry it took so long to reply. The boat was in the water and connected to the shorepower with all appliances on. I asked the company why and he said that he didn't know why. The water pressure pump was sucking air so kept switching on and off for five months. If they had checked my boat every three/four weeks they should have noticed all the power switched on, wouldn't you think?

i was told by an employe of m.g. duff anodes, the best way to avoid problems with electrolisis ,is don't plug in, unless you really have too.

I would certainly endorse that. Any stray earth leakage currents will eventually end up in the sea, usually through the electrical grounding, effectively setting up an impressed current anodic system using the expensive immersed bits as sacrificial anodes.

I feel that this would have been the major cause of the "dissolving" outdrives.

I would never advocate keeping marina power connected over long periods when it is not needed. All that is necessary to start serious corrosion is a slightly damp piece of electrical mains equipment where the insulation resistance drops sufficiently to generate a significant earth leakage current (milliamps are enough to do severe damage over time) and away goes the current impressed depletion of immersed components

as I understand, you paid the whatever £200 a month, they did the normal sod all, and the outdrives got eaten.

Quastion is do they now give you back the guardiennage loot and say fair cop, no we didn't, or do you go legal and try and gettem for cl's?

Prob been mentioned before but have a look at www.yachtsurvey.com.It is a very large site but if you dig you will find info, and your problem is specifically mentioned.It is not that rare a problem in marinas.

With reference to earth leakage currents & problems with shore power: might the problems be avoided by islolating the 230v circuit [enabling ventilation etc.] and the batteries & trickle charger. Then supply via an RCD, i.e. no earth connection twixt boat & land?
