Bradwell report 25th April 2010

Now that Peter is getting better you cannot keep him indoors anymore, he jumped at the invite I sent him, and along with Steve, Graham, Dave and self, we left the Marina at 8-25am and pushed East against the tide for about an hour, set the anchor in same place as yesterday and sat back hoping to improve on our former result. WRONG well almost, I did manage my mandatory Pouting, and the doggies were in residence. As the last of the flood ended I got the bait dropper to work, but as the ebb started we were washed off the mark, and the hook had to come up and reposition was called for, that cost us two full droppers worth of minced up squid and herring.

The ebb started to run and I was full of hope that having longer in this area i.e. all of the ebb instead of just half of it as Saturday, we would do a lot better, WRONG, apart from the doggies that haunt us nothing else was hungry, but the Pouting and small whiting were still there as well. So in between the sausage rolls bacon butties cups of tea and losing gear on the rough bottom and the continual banter we waited with “baited breath” pardon the pun.

As happened Saturday so today went the same way, almost 3 .1/2. Hours of nothing to speak about, went by then BANG off went Dave rod, and being on braid it was a very BIG BANG, but as is his wont he allowed the fish to get well down tide before he decided to do something about it, resulting in a lot of grunting and groaning and stripping of line before he brought back a smallish male Thornback. This acted as a spur to the rest of us, and before long Steve’s rod indicated an enquiry, he was busy doing the washing up so I assisted him and brought back a plump Codling 5lbs to the boat, I handed the rod back to him so that when the leader was taken he could claim the fish, “I am generous like that” honest!!. We had another two similar sized codling, and a good sized Thornback, unfortunately all of them came from the starboard side of the boat, the port side i.e Peter, Graham, and Me had nothing all day apart from Dogs. All the decent fish came from the port side, so I was reduced to being “gilley” for their lordships on the left.

Even when I tried to improve Peters luck by chucking him out on the left we still failed. Then to put a tin hat on it Dave got a tremendous knock and battled a fine bass back to the boat.

only to disgrace himself by losing what was probably a better one almost at the net, but not quite seen, but undoubtedly a bass. Less than ten minutes later.

Graham meantime was building himself an island of lead weights just in case we should spring a leak he would have something to stand on. At 4pm the tide died away to a mere trickle and for the “RIGHT” people it made a welcome reprieve, from the LEFTIES crowing, when the anchor was weighed and tracks were made in a westerly direction, we had to stop anyway Graham was down to his last hook!!
