Don't you think that after publication of an article in a national magazine it is just a little late to be talking to those affected?!!
Which world do these guys live in!
The story leaked earlier this week so we had use our reactive press briefing which gives some basic information but no details because we still need to talk to staff. We can't control what is published but can't let the media to drive our plans to talk to staff. Like I said, more on Tuesday.
For the sake of averting a major backlash from boaters, make sure that your posting on Tuesday has some meat in it, not the usual meaningless waffle that is issued by modern management.
Flogging off Bell Weir may well be a serious mistake, "what with Chatty Dave being a Union rep: an' all"
Some of the upstream locks are very isolated - Shifford, Godstow and Days come to mind.
EA may well have unearthed a Hornets nest here, that is if users have a few more cahones than they (we) have shown to date.
The lock-keepers have now been informed that 22 of the lock houses are to be 'disposed of' within 5 years. Next time you are out boating and you see a lock-keeper looking forlorn, be nice to him, he may have just been told that he is going to be made homeless.
This is even worse than feared, once sold they will never be bought back and the infracstructure will be lost forever. I see also in MBM this month there is an advert for the entire Caversham works lock island. How can the EA ever hope to maintain the river properly if they sell off all the facilities? it reminds me of the sell off of the railways in the sixties, never again will the river be what it was.
It was brought home to me last week when I bought my freshly anifouled and polished boat back up from Reading. By the time I got home the sides were covered in slime again, none of the locksides had even been pressure washed over the winter. I also had had my props expensively repaired due to various dings on the bottom last year, but what a waste of money as I touched bottom 5 times on the way backup.
Warning to everybody there are shoals on each side of Benson lock, one at the weir stream and another at the top of the upstream lockcut, also the Beale Park Islands, Scours lane islands, North Stoke where the river turns etc.... I only draw less than a metre as well /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I think Chris makes an interesting comparison with the closure of the railways in the sixties. They were hopelessly inefficient and overmanned and some closures were unavoidable, but what they really needed was investment which the government of the time was unwilling or unable to provide. The same goes for the river and the more costs are cut the more likely it is that we will lose a valuable resource.
I am not sure though that the sell off of the Caversham lock island is so much of an issue though. That whole area has been earmarked for much needed redevlopment for some time. A proposal for a mix of leisure and residential was close to approval a few years ago when a protest group managed to stop it by getting the old swimming pool by the lock listed. After a long delay I hear that new plans are being put forward which should significantly improve the area and make it much more welcoming as a "gateway to Reading".
The EA uses the hardstanding area at T&K for its workshops (rather restricting its use to leisure boaters, but that is another issue) and presumably could move everything there if necessary.
The press release about this is embargoed until midnight tonight to make sure all staff have received their full briefing in the post by the time they get home later today. I will publish the release first thing tomorrow morning.
I wonder what would happen if someone sent a repair bill for grounding damage to EA. After all, if it happened in an area where you had no reason to expect a shoal, and you were not a large vessel, it could hardly be negligent navigation could it.
